Page titles and H1 tags

My website has been built using wordpress.

We've gone to great lengths to optimise each page and use the correct H-tag structure. However, I've noticed when crawling the site that the wordpress page titles are being highlighted as H1 tags even though they aren't visible on the page.

When we build a new page on our site, we need to fill in the title/heading section at the top, but this is more for internal purposes. When we build out the page then that's when we set the H1 title for the page which is visible to users.

Is this going to be an issue for us in terms of SEO - both from the point of view that the search engine may pick up we have two H1 tags, but also would it count as hiding text from the page?

    Firstly, you need to check the HTML coding of your website to ensure that the title and H1 are placed separately. Secondly, there is a useful plugin Yoast SEO that you must install. It can help you fix the SEO related issues of your website. You can check your website in Screaming Frog tool as well.

      A better idea would be to ditch wordpress.

      Since the OP keeps mentioning "we" do this, and "we" do that....

      You'd think "WE" would know how to build a site the right way.

      Just reiterates what wordpress really is and who uses it.

      Here's a tip. Use blogspot instead. At least it's a better CMS,
      SEO'd like google wants it, and no idiotic plugins needed.
      Heck, google will even essentially host your domain for free!

      But "we" doubt you take the advice.

        Again, that's not good advice, sorry. You're turning an SEO discussion into Windows Vs Mac. They're both platforms, it just depends what you do with them. I have no issues with Wordpress. I suggest an SEO plugin and a security plugin, both which turn a bunch of things off. It takes about 60 seconds and it behaves fine, no reason to insult the plugins here, that's how the platform was designed to work. As far as the "politics" behind it's features, everything is a hook and can get unregistered. You can write a plugin to completely turn everything wordpress does off and when you instantiate it, it will print out a blank file.

        I use Wordpress day in and day out, I have no idea what that person did to have that problem. The H tags are extremely straight forward in WP. The page/post title gets the h1 tag with most themes, the popular SEO plugins will let you control the title tag, the slug can be controlled as well, and the h2-h6 tags are right in the editor.

        No reason to over complicate this.

            Sorry, I put "we" as in the business. I do not build websites. I am not a web developer. A web development company was hired to create the website.

            I'm simply trying to optimise the site and ensure we meet best practice, which is why I raised the question.

              Excellent examples.

              I kid.

              I understand Paul's point of view. blogger is streamlined... But I use wordpress a lot. It's got issues, but beats heck out of creating a site the pre-woprdpress way.

              And, if you learn a thing or two about using it, you end up with good sites.

              I know a guy, web designer, who does amazing things with wordpress and with blogger. But, he talks about Wix like Paul talks about blogger. Go figure!

                Yet they're all multi-million dollar businesses that have been around longer than anyone on this forum. Longer than even plain HTML or the internet.

      Hi

      Yes, I use Screaming Frog, which is how I first spotted the “issue” once the developers delivered the site.

      If I look at the page source I can see:

      <nav class="primary-navbar is-hidden" role="navigation"><h1 class="primary-nav--mobile-title">[THIS IS THE PAGE NAME I ENTER VISIBLE IN THE BACK END]</h1>

      I was told this wouldn’t be an issue, but I wanted to double check here/get your input.
