Linking Keyword To Another Page Warning Yoast

Hi,

Firstly I am using Yoast in Wordpress and I'm aware sometimes it picks up errors etc due to the coding and also the 'focus keyword' has no bearing on seo directly..

BUT if I'm using the focus keyword field as a guide, it is giving me a red warning because I am linking the main keyword in an article about said product (product name) to it's relevant affiliate product in the website's amazon shop... obviously, as I want people to click through to the product at some point! This has really confused me, so I thought I'd post here.

It gives the following warning: "You're linking to another page with the focus keyword you want this page to rank for. Consider changing that if you truly want this page to rank."

So am I doing something drastically negative by linking out with the same keyword?? I'm really confused!!

Thanks for reading,
Steve

If you link to another site with the keyword you want to rank for, you're helping them move up in the SERPs for that keyword. Since you're interested in SEO, not a good idea to get other sites a boost.

Basically, every SEO effort you make, depending on how your pages are linked, are going to help someone else beat you at the keyword you want to win for.

Why do you have to link with the keyword you're interested in?

Why can't you link with: See what I'm talking about or Get more info here or something like that?

By the way, what's more likely to get people to click on the link:
    the keyword
    or a phrase like:
check it out for yourself here?
    Get it for $x here?

That's the thing, I'm not linking out so to speak.. I'm linking to the product description page on MY site. So it's just internal link juice, would this still affect the article page ranking???

Good and fair point though on the link text, I will start using different words or phrases to link within the article from now on.

      Thanks,
      Steve

Yes, it will, but very little and, if you have lots of pages linking to the one that sells, it's a good thing or a really good thing.

It's an affiliate link so the first thing you should be doing is adding a nofollow to the affiliate link.

    I missed this part...

Does it really matter which internal page ranks? I mean ranking the page with the actual affiliate link isn't a bad thing, one less click for a buyer.

Well I suppose it's more is it going to affect the article page's ranking?! I don't know. I mean that is what Yoast is ultimately trying to warn you about but then does it think I'm linking out to another site?!

More so for me, some of my links are internal so it doesn't look unprofessional by me trying to take them off my site at the soonest opportunity and lose trust. That's my opinion but then I do have some links going straight out.

      Cheers,
      Steve

Depends on what you're doing and trying to rank. I get that message quite a bit when writing winery profile pieces on my site. I link to the winery with their name, which is often what I'm trying to rank the post for.

I don't expect to outrank a brand for their own brand inquiry, I just want to be among the first non brand terms for the search. Plus, in my case, if you're writing for users first and foremost, then having the link to the winery website makes sense. I find that the rankings do just fine.

If you're creating other pages/post within your website to get a "particular" post also on your domain to rank better in SERP, I think is best to ignore the Yoast SEO warning.

In my opinion, you're only telling the search engines how important that page is and passing SEO link juice from other internal pages to this very one.

I have used this tactics on my blog to get a post high in Google search. I think Yoast is just concern about the external link with the focus keyword, but didn't take into consideration that this is not an outright external link to a different domain.

If you're doing this within your domain, I think is fine.
