Content Marketing Won't Always Improve Your SEO

Content marketing and search engine optimization have become completely intertwined. Some people try to look at them as separate from one another, but it really doesn't make any sense. Not in today's digital marketing landscape, at least.

We know that content marketing is the strategy of creating and distributing valuable content that your potential customers will want. It's typically free, but the end goal is to eventually get some type of profitable action because of it.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the act of pursuing top placement within the search results of the major search engines, through tactics that are proven to be effective. The two main factors, as stated by Google, are your content and links (in no particular order, of course).

When we look at these two marketing tactics, it makes sense that they go hand in hand. After all -- how could you possibly build authoritative links back to your website, if you weren't creating fantastic content that people were excited to read and share? Content marketing is a major foundation to any and all successful SEO campaigns. But, there can be danger in making it your only tactic when it comes to increasing your search engine ranking.

What Can You Do If Content Marketing Isn't Improving Your SEO?
Unfortunately, sometimes a really great content marketing campaign won't be enough to significantly improve your current SEO results. Why? Lots of reasons, and we'll discuss some big ones here.

How Strong Is Your Social Media Presence?
This can be a big one when it comes to search engine optimization. While it's not technically one of the main factors, we know it's an important consideration. It's taken into account by the crawlers when searchers pose a query, but most importantly, it's really one of the main ways your content will be shared. If you're creating valuable content that no one sees or shares, it won't bring any value to your organization. Make sure your social media campaign is on point and effective, to ensure you're getting as much sharing and engagement from your content as possible.

Are Your Keywords Still Relevant?
A major component of both SEO and content marketing is your keyword research. It's critical that your campaigns are based around the terms that consumers actually use to search for your products and services. Trends and people change, so if you're basing your content on your keyword research from last year, it's time to do some new research. You may find you need to make some major changes.

What Are Your Competitors Doing?
Don't be surprised if your competition noticed you stepped up your game, and decided to step up theirs. They may have outsourced help, or brought someone in to work on this full-time. Take note of what everyone else is doing, because that may give you some insight. There are plenty of tools out there that will allow you to keep an eye on what your neighbours are doing online, and it can be extremely helpful to your own campaign.

How Long Have You Been Doing It?
Another important factor here is the length of time you've been focusing on this one initiative. It can take 6 months to realize any actual benefits, so don't expect things to change overnight. You need to start out with a solid plan, that is measurable. You need to have results to analyze, before you can tweak and optimize your campaign to perform better. Sometimes, you just need to sit back and wait.

If your content marketing campaign isn't yielding the SEO results you were hoping for, don't give up on it just yet. See what you can change and optimize, and don't forget about the importance of quality link-building as well. Running an effective SEO campaign is similar to riding a bicycle uphill. It's hard, slow, and you just need to keep pedalling -- otherwise, you'll go backwards.

Content isn't strictly articles (downloads, videos, online tools, etc...).

The value is in whatever traffic wants or needs at the price they can afford.
