Ranking an Ecommerce Website

I am working for a company with a website that sells a lot of products. Right now only 10% of our traffic is through organic search. I think this number is incredibly low. We are paying for a lot of our traffic and it of course costs a lot of money.

The site needs to rank better in some of the long tail keywords that we have to pay adwords for.

What do I need to do in order to rank in some of the longer tail keywords? We do not have a lot of "keyword rich" content on each product page. Only a snippet about the product they will be purchasing.

    Learn SEO.

Followed links from authority pages are the strongest ranking factor. Obviously do on-page SEO first and that includes optimizing followed internal links from relevant pages.

So I should get links from "do follow" blog posts and such to my internal pages? Do I need a lot of content to rank? Like is a 1 line description about the products just not enough for google to grab onto?

That depends on how competitive the product is. For some items, one or two lines may be enough, for hotly contested items like DSLR cameras for example, one line of content is not going to rank diddly.

You probably know Amazon rank for almost everything in the retail consumer market, due to their massive authority and trust factor, but you will notice many of their product pages have very little content, whereas high value/volume/popular items have a ton of supporting content, images, charts, tables etc.

So follow their example, and if you get some decent backlinks as Yukon suggested you can easily pass them in the SERP's for less competitive stuff.

Here are 5 things you can do to improve your organic traffic:

    1. Article titles should be 60-70 characters long
    2. First 20-25 words of every article online should reiterate what the article is promising to deliver
    3. Every post should have an image with caption and description
    4. Every post should have an internal link to a related article on the home site
    5. Every post should have an external link to a credible site.

You need to build high quality backlinks, using your targeted keywords (and variations of those keywords) as anchor text. High quality backlinks are those which are dofollow, on high PA pages, contextual (in/surrounded by text that is related to your niche), and relevant. With enough high quality backlinks, your site will eventually increase in rankings for your targeted keywords.

What if you are in a NICHE market and there are very few ways to get backlinks? At least from other sites in your NICHE.
