We always think SEO when we design a website. We make sure we include keywords, we label images, we do meta tags but we forget to do an on-going maintenance. Clean Up Links: If your site has a blog, you have probably written a number of posts since the inception. And as a good SEO person you have linked a lot to external reputable sources. It will help you detect those broken links. Dead Links is another tool that is absolutely free to use. You can either delete the outdated links or you can replace them with new links. Google doesn't like broken links. It tells them that the site's content is not fresh.
Testing Compatibility: If your site is not responsive, Google doesn't like it. In simple words, your website needs to function seamlessly on all browsers and all devices. Since browsers upgrade and hardware applications change too, you need to test compatibility of your website and its applications on a regular basis. If you have used a semantic code you will have little to worry. But you need to manual testing to ensure you are up to date. And when you are at it, do it exhaustively. Check IE, Safari, Opera, Chrome and Firefox on Windows as well as Mac. If you want to do the testing automatically, you can use tools like Browsershots.
Speed Optimization: When you started off your code probably looked clean and your website was pretty light. As time passes, new things get added and we don't notice the clutter in the backend and the weight of new elements. If your website speed becomes slow over time you will have bounce backs which is not good from SEO point of view. You need to keep cleaning your code to make it leaner. There are tools like Pagetest, Google Page Speed and Y!Slow that help to check loading time. Besides code you can look at image optimization and other cleaning options.
And this process might seem extremely tiresome and boring. But since it is necessary you can devise some shortcuts. Automatic site audit tools provided by Moz and others will definitely help. But while doing code clean up you can use comments for quicker results. So you can do one exhaustive manual site audit and add comments in long nested tags. Comments like 'header styles end here' will help you scan instead of read line by line.
