how do you rank for a keyword without any on page text content?

i want my homepage to rank for a keyword. i have spent quite a bit of time makeing sure my site is the ultimate destination for this keyword... its commerce based.
The problem is... how can I rank for this keyword when my site is a commerce store and i don't have two to three paragraphs rambling about my keyword for optimization? if i add a big text blog to the page it will DEFINITELY take away from user experience.
Can keyword anchor backlnks with the keyword im trying to rank for beat out optimized pages that have backlinks? keep in mind this is a VERY VERY VERY tough keyword.... but i want to stay o the right track. The site that ranks number 1 for this search term is famous in the seo world for being cutthroat about getting backlinks.... but they still have a bs 2 paragraph rambling about the keyword. how much is this really helping them rank for the term?
