Is it safe to conclude that Adwords influence Google Rankings?

My blog has been ranking for completely different keywords. I redesigned the homepage to start offering web design services and at first found it hard to rank to local website design related searches. (I could rank on page 3 and 4).

I decided to run a campaign on Adwords targeting only search results, I noticed that my keywords shot from page 3 to page 2 and 1 a week later. I was happy and stopped the Adwords campaign. But the worst happened and 2 days later my website dropped to the previous positions.

Last week I re-enabled the campaign and now I am back to page one. This has really puzzled me and I am worried that if I stop the campaigns my rankings will drop.

Has anyone else experienced this?

**Sorry for my poor English.

I use Ahrefs to track keywords, and I only use Firefox to check search my own websites

You said you were trying to rank locally. I don't think Ahrefs is going to track your local rankings very well. Most rank trackers don't.

I would verify them manually with a clean browser in private browsing mode and make sure you are not logged into any Google property.

But to answer your question, no AdWords should not have any direct impact on your rankings.

If you believe that CTR influences rankings, there could be an indirect influence on your rankings. When people see your listing multiple times, by the second or third time they are more likely to click on it.

But I don't think you would see a change as fast as you did, especially for local keywords that are likely fairly small volume.

  • What do you think? Does Google give preferential treatment in their search results (i.e. higher organic rankings) to websites that also advertise in Google AdWords? If that were true, then advertising in AdWords would directly boost your website’s search rankings.

The answer is no. Advertising does not directly affect your website’s organic search rankings. This is a very common misconception, but the reality is, SEO does not directly impact AdWords, and AdWords does not directly impact your SEO. They are completely different beasts.
