SEO Tips: The Complete List (201 Actionable Techniques)

An interesting article by Brian Dean.

Some of the things that caught my eye:

- Publish Long Content: this is a hot topic here in the SEO section and I'm curious to hear your thoughts

- Relaunch Old Content: sometimes it's not about creating more content but rather optimizing the content that is already working for you for whatever metrics you consider success (leads, traffic, engagement, etc)

- Replace "Published On" Dates with "Last Updated": this is quite interesting, showing your readers not when you posted the article but the last time you revised it (and probably even upgraded it with more content) can lead to better engagement. Nobody wants to read "old" content

- Write Content That Covers a Topic In-Depth: this can be actually to our community here and Steve B wrote a very good post about it - Marketing cliches don't make good posts. The more specific, in-depth and actionable your content is the better. Same goes for posting questions here

Many of the suggestions refer to SEO while others also refer to content promotion.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts about these strategies.

As long as it needs to be updated.

It depends on the niche entirely, as Yukon wisely pointed out.

I would say if you are writing about Internet Marketing then it needs to be updated regularly because it's a very fast-moving ever-changing topic/niche.

Others will have to be updated less regularly as they don't change that often. That being said it does not mean you cannot expand on the initial post. Turning "25 Theme Parties for Your Son" to the "Ultimate Guide to Themed Birthday Parties for Your Son" and adding 75 more themes will deliver a LOT more value.

It's all about focusing on updating which pages bring you the most traffic.

      Protip: Don't start with junk.

This is the article that specific point is in reference to. It's worth a read if you're genuinely interested in the approach and what a substantially successful company saw in it's data when it applied this strategy.

In my experience, long content doesn't always do better than shorter content.

Totally depends on the structure, choice of keywords, and various other factors.

On average, my blog posts are around 2,000 words. I just hope that this is going to help my blog climb higher in the search engine. Of course, I try my best to write content that people are looking for. Thanks for reminding that in-depth topic works.

If it's evergreen content (ex: gardening) you're better off removing all the static dates that show up as plain text on the page and replacing it with a php date code that returns todays date.

    PHP Code:
    <? print(Date("l F d, Y")); ?>
Traffic won't care either way about a date when it comes to evergreen content.

Google uses the on-page date for their Date search filter so your page will always be up to date (current date), while competition pages will be buried in the search results If they even show up at all (very old dates on their webpages).

Google will constantly update their own data (Google cache) showing the last date they crawled your webpage.

You can also use this technique with a site:domain.com Google search then change the Google search Date filter to This Week and Google will return a list of the pages they've indexed/reindexed within the last week. This can't be done without the php date code technique.

Anyways, this has several advantages over a static date.
