1. Create a Compelling and Keyword-Focused Title
For ranking well in search it’s more important to create a compelling title that is as relevant as possible to the searcher’s intent and context as possible. If it means that you need to add a modifier in front of it to make it more compelling then so be it.
Also the closer you can move your primary keyword towards the beginning of the title the better. This is will signify to the search engine that it’s an important keyword.

2. Create a Compelling Description
A good description will speak directly to the searchers pain, problem or desire.
Although optimizing the page description doesn’t directly help with rankings, it can help increase click through rates to your website. So optimizing the description is a good practice if you want to attract more visitors to your website.

3. Optimize the URL
When optimizing the page URL, try to keep it short (3-5 words). The URL should contain the keyword you’re trying to rank for. No need to put the full title as it won’t really help much with SEO.

4. Optimize the ALT Tags for Your Images
Something a lot of bloggers don’t optimize for is their images. By not optimizing your images, you’re not fully optimizing your page for SEO.
It’s important not to keyword spam and repeat the same keywords for all your images. Try to vary your keywords.

5. Wrap Your Title in an H1 Tag
When optimizing your title, ensure that you’ve wrapped it in an h1 tag. You can check if your title is wrapped in an h1 tag by right clicking on the title and then clicking on “inspect” in Chrome.

6. Add Embeddable Content

The more engaging the content, the more likely your visitors are going to engage with your site and share your content. Try to add embed at least one content type per blog post.

7. Add Related Keywords
One of the best ways to attract more traffic to your blog posts is to use long tail keywords - keywords that are related to your main topic keyword in some way.
Long tail keywords get less traffic than your primary keywords, but combined they can drive 70% of the overall traffic to your website.

8. Focus on Page Loading Times
Google stated that they use page loading times as one of their ranking factors.
If you don’t have a site that loads fast, then it can hurt your chances of ranking well in search.
One of the tools you can use to see how well your site is performing is gtmetrix.com. It will grade your website based on several factors.

9. Add a Social Sharing Bar to your Posts
Some authoritative sites like Moz, have shown that there is a high correlation between social shares and rankings.
The more your content gets shared across social media, the more people will become aware of your brand and site and will start to link to your content more often. So although getting more social shares may not directly influence rankings, it can help you drive more traffic and links to your content.

10. Add Your Focus Keyword in the First 100 Words
Adding your primary keyword in the first 100 words of your blog post is a good practice and can help with SEO.

11. Add Internal Links
Linking to relevant pages from your blog post is one of the easiest and most effective ways to optimize your site for SEO. When linking manually to other pages on your site within the body, use related keywords and phrases that would add value for your readers.

12. Focus on Creating Longer Articles
Studies have showed that longer content outperformed shorter content in the search results. Looking at the top 10 results, the average length of the articles in the top 3 positions were approximately 2400-2500 words.
It’s generally a good idea to write longer articles (2000+ words) if you want to rank well in Google and other search engines — especially if you’re trying to rank for a competitive keyword.
But does that mean that you always need to create longer content in order to rank well? Not necessarily.
Sometimes a shorter article can be sufficient, as long as it satisfies the searcher’s need. In other words, if the searcher gets what they’re looking for when they visit your page, they are much more likely to share it and this too can lead to more links, engagement, and therefore higher rankings.
It’s important to keep in mind that longer content doesn’t necessarily mean better content. If your content is long but lacks substance and doesn’t fulfill the searchers need, then it won’t really matter because people won’t read your content or share it.

Improving your on-page SEO can get your site ranked higher in search without much time or effort. By implementing these SEO strategies you should be able to improve the overall user experience on your site, get more social shares, and drive more traffic.

    That's embarrassing.

If you are going to follow #12 about creating really long content, I would skip this one and leave the meta description blank.

Where longer content really shines and where someone can make an argument it might outperform shorter content is in attracting a lot of related searches, sometimes search terms you never even realized that people might use.

If you leave the meta description blank, Google will attempt to find a snippet of your content that most closely matches what the searcher is looking for or the searcher's intent, and Google has gotten pretty damn good at it.

You CTR will likely actually be higher by letting Google pick the description.

Now if it is a shorter page, with a very focused intent for 1 or 2 search terms, you may want to write a description that you feel will work in that case.

    Otherwise, let Google pick it.

Also, some fool wrote a quick and simple onpage SEO tutorial here.

It's like watching people burn money.

It's so easy to optimize multiple SERP descriptions and SERP titles per each money page based on the search query. It's equivalent to having 10 (or whatever amount) laser focused page titles and meta descriptions.

Nobody only gets traffic for one keyword on each money page so the static SERP title/description is counterproductive when they could just as easily break a money page down to serve multiple types of traffic.

Wikipedia nailed this technique years ago and still going strong today.

Yukon, are you saying to not include a title tag <title> and let Google pick the title as well as picking a description?

Also, just thought of it. How well does Bing do with picking a description and title when there is not a description meta tag or a title tag?

        Thanks!

As a follow up, I checked several Wikipedia pages. They did not have meta descriptions, but they did have <title> tags. So, I am curious, are you saying that we not use <title> tags and that Google will suggest a title relative to a specific search? Also, how well does Bing deal with pages without a meta description and/or title?

          Thanks!

I always wonder why all topics in this forum are focused solely on content and external links. Seems like people have developed some mild form of paranoia... There are numerous other issues that do carry more depth but are completely ignored, although these strategies bring better results. Links and content does matter - they are part of the basics for Google ranking algorithms. However, webpage optimization as defined in 12 points is very important also, especially if you deal with meta-information and keywords.

While being somewhat aware about these issues, most bloggers here seem to ignore them altogether:
      1. Mobile website. Usually adoptive design is one of the top requirements for new websites. Also, technical specifications are usually listed for both desktop and mobile versions. Lately mobile traffic has exceeded desktop traffic many times over. Also, web surfers pursue different goals while browsing internet in their cell phones. Therefore, website's structure should be different. Mobile traffic is more informative - we need to approach our customers differently - do not try to get them to buy something over the mobile webpage, instead provide necessary information to lure them in via their desktop computer later. SEO audits do usually indicate that mobile version is not optimal for google rankings, but they never provide any specific information.
      Attachment 24182

      2. How long content should be written. Rule of the thumb is more the better - this improves Google ranking. However, this approach disregards behavioral factor - information should be concise for web user to enjoy it. Filling it with empty words and meaningless sentences would alienate your potential customers. I never like these tasks - create 1000 words long content exactly. Some information takes less, some takes more words to lay it out properly - therefore there are no hard limits for quality writing.

      3. Structure of your website. You write about the importance of content but forget to explore how content affects your website. Is this content easy to read? Does it naturally fit within web pages? Many people spend tons of money on links that take users to poorly designed websites which naturally results in high bounce rate.

Great post! Just to add another important technique is not to forget to add social signals on your pages as google is carefully watching Facebook likes, shares, Twitter tweets, and even Pinterest pins with Google +1's being given the most ranking recognition, which should nor come as a surprise, followed by Facebook of cause.

You don't know wrapping from a title or an h1. Something in that "tip" got lost in translation. Probably due to people using WP and having no clue. One of my biggest peeves. You hear something from someone who heard it from a guy down the street.

Next you'll be telling us how to check if the sky is blue.

My gosh you people have got to get a grip on reality.

Reality is not a bad thing. Mostly.

Hey! It's a nice information. Thanks for sharing it. ON Page is the prime factor that helps to rank a website and to manage it as per Google. Even the most difficult task which most of them faces while trying to rank it is the SEO process. Without a good ON Page of a website, the OFF page can't be done easily and it would be a waste of time to create backlinks for it.
