Guys,

I use a lot of backlinks and even despite tha fact that I have read a lot on this I receive two contradicting 'theories'.

Should I put backlinks on ANY high ranked pages or only on those that are in the same subject as my link?

Example. I have a 'weight loss' website. Is it better to place links in places where there is discussion about weigh loss(on thatwebsite) or on any website with high page rank(and it does not matter if 'weight loss' key words are there)?

I prefer to put backlinks on sites that share similar topic or themes. So for weight loss website, a general health site, a diet site, or a fitness site would be fine.

Anyway, what do you mean by high ranked pages? Are you referring to PR or SERPs?

I mean PR. Will placing backlink on 'diet site'(with google rank 5) will give me more than placing backlink at...'SuperCopperSite' that has nothing to do with weight loss/diet but has google rank of 8?

  • You should do both. Because it makes sense to do both. Search engines want to return relevant results. So it makes sense that your links appear on related sites. But it also makes sense that they appear on non related sites.

A newspaper site is a great example. What is a newspaper site about? is it about News, Sports, Classifieds, Weather? It's about a whole lot of things. So it's natural to have links from a whole lot of places on them.

      Hi disi,

Both types of backlinks will give you benefits, but if you have limited resources you'll want to focus you efforts where you get the most ROI. When you get backlinks from irrelevant web pages you can include your keywords in the anchor to make those pages a little bit relevant. However, you are missing out on a big benefit that comes from relevant pages: targeted traffic.

In my opinion, it makes more sense to go for backlinks from relevant pages with high traffic. Using this strategy you may find that you get twice the traffic from direct links as you get from the search engines, even after achieving top ranking. After all, isn't it targeted traffic that you seek? Why limit you traffic to just what's available from the search engines? Go relevant and get it all!

When in doubt disi, plug a SERP #1 site from a niche you are interested in into Yahoo Site Explorer or backlinkwatch dot com (which lists anchor text too, unlike Yahoo) and see just how many relevant or irrelevant backlinks they have.

That will tell you what's happening there (even if all backlinks to that site are not shown). In my experience, relevancy is massively overrated.

As far as I know, every link you can get helps. As for efficiency of link building I have the following oppinion. (please note, this is my oppinion, i don't have any scientific proof for it since seo is not an exact science)

most effective: A link from a relevant authority site (high pr, ranks for a lot of terms)

very effective: A link from an unrelevant authority site (high pr, see angela's + paul's backlinks)
also very effective: a link from a relevant non authority site
[I can't tell which one of the very effective ones actually brings you more benefits]

not very effective: a link from an unrelevant non authority site

another measurement coming into play concerning the efficiency of link building is the anchor text relevancy for the term you're trying to rank for.
That's a whole different story and I'm just in the process of finding out what works best (LSI, always same anchor text, anyone?^^)

In my experience the higher the PR then the less you have to worry about relevancy.

So if you can get a PR8 link from a non related site you should take it. But if an off topic PR1 site offers you a link you should generally reject it.

Kinda makes sense because you can afford to be more picky with PR0-3 sites because there are more of them .

I would like to have my backlinks from both relavan and irelevant sites. But Dburk nail it. it does make more sense to get those relelvent backlinks as it gives more targeted traffic to your site.

    Thanks
