Is Hubpages And Infobarrel Good For Building Backlinks

Hey everyone, I am struggling with the whole building backlinks process. I read that sites like hubpages and ezine where good places to build backlinks by writing articles and linking them to your website, then on another site I read that's a bad idea because it does not work or help much. Anyone who can shine some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
