Few things are really very important from SEO point of view for e-commerce website, these points are:-
The internal linking of the page is very important for e-commerce website.
I have seen that most of the e-commerce website don't put content in their website, they just put the products but it is wrong strategy.
The e-commerce website must have some content relevant to the products or keywords to which you have to target.
Check the speed of the website; optimize it in mobile also because now users are purchasing products more from mobile as compared to desktop or laptop.
Remove all the broken links, rectify the redirection issue if found, and put the correct canonical tag in the web page.
You must take care that the product images used in the website must be clear and its name must be specified.
Well there are many points you should take care, from my side the last one is navigation of the website. Make sure that the navigation of the website is perfect; every page is linked with its own category or product. The page must be connected to its specific menu for the ease of users.
Insert the links of social networking sites in your e-commerce website; it will be helpful to increase the visitor’s interaction.

If your Ecommerce website selling about 'Gel'.. You write content related it such as 'How to use...' 'What are benefits of ...' 'Top 10 best gel for man' or even a review about it. Then find ways to promote it to your potential customers ( Social media is the best). I recommend you use SEMrush or Google keyword planner to research keyword before write a content. By this way you will ranking for site easier.

Do both on page and off page seo steps on your website.

What your ecommerce website made from - wordpress, magento or from scratch? If you are making an ecommerce site made from Wordpress, install an SEO plugin. Otherwise, if you are making website from scratch, you need to insert all the tags, keywords and title needed.

Do social media marketing, and blogging.

    SITE MAINTENANCE

Site maintenance and upkeep are common SEO strategies for e-commerce websites. Due to the nature of e-commerce sites and the amount of products being sold, you have to be persistent in the upkeep of your product pages. Perform regular maintenance to make sure none of your landing pages or product pages are generating 404 errors.

    INTERNAL LINKING STRUCTURE

The fewest number of clicks a customer needs to make in order to reach any particular page on your domain is ideal. This is why creating an internal linking structure is essential for any SEO campaign. The key to interiorlinking is to make sure you’re linking to relevant and related pages within your own domain. Do not create internal links simply to increase the amount of links. This can be one of the simplest tactics to undertake since you should be in control of all the internal links inside your own domain.

Before you begin any SEO work (on-site or off-site), you need to start with research – keyword research and competitor research and also you get started, understand this: SEO work isn’t a one-time deal. Google and the other major search engines are updating their algorithms constantly in order to bring the best results to searchers. Because of this, you’ll need to stay on top of the updates and adjust your strategy accordingly.

Opening a store for e-commerce business or starting a website of E-commerce would require certain strategies that must impact right on the minds of your targeted customers. E-commerce business owners doesn't do marketing for each of their products, instead they work for their brand name to make it popularize all over the world to get customers from around the world within few days.

The strategies are same as on others we do, the only thing we need to change is to change the websites & to prefer those which are related with E-commerce. It will be effective.

Ecommerce strategies differ depending on a few factors.

#1 the size of the store. If you have an ecommerce store with 100 products then it is feasable to optimise all of the products as well as the categories. If you ahve 10k products then it is not. this drives the keyword research phase as depoending on the category or product approach the terms you go after may be different.

#2 the platform, If you are using WP or Magento then there are a lot of modules available to optimise the entire website. If you are using an "Enterprise" platform you may find even the most obvious optimisations are not able to be implemented. Example would be Venda not having a good solution for canonicals out of the box.

#3 the competition and budget, If you are in with the real big boys but only have a 1k per month SEO budget then you need to consider what kinds of terms you will be optimising for. Example it would not be prudent to go after "iphone 7" as a term. Longer tail terms would be your best bet. At which point you may also decide to poptimise more at the product level as again the competition will be lower

Now you have your main answers I would do the following.

Setup the site to have products at the domain level. not in a hierarchy. this helps with several things but mainly prevents the chances of duplicate products with different urls.

Keyword research based on the answers to #1 and #3. determine your category keywords in almost every case and decide on product keywords if you think it is wise to do so.

Ensure you optimise every page with a good amount of well tailored content and include your main keywords and synonyms in the title H tags and within the content.
On category pages ensure you take into account if you will be showing the product names and descriptions in addition to your own content.
compare the current top 10 sites and their SEO factors. mainly content and backlink profile.

Repeat with your "Hero" products as there are always some products that deserve the attention because of the sales volume. check with purchasing that these products will still be aroudn for the forseeable future as there is nothing worse than wasting money on optimising a product and it go out of stock next month.

One thing that is often left unoptimised on ecommerce sites is the faceted search or layered navigation depending on what platform you are using. ensure you get search engine friendly urls when you apply filters and if possible also make sure the order in which these are applied is controlled so you do not have multiple filters appearing in different orders.

my last big point is control of canonicals. If you have a great landing page from a filtered search then you do not want it to canonicalise back to its parent category. most platforms do not allow this easily but Mageworx SEO suite for magento for example will do it.

Backlinks are sometimes difficult for ecom but social tends to be easier. put in a platform to ask for shares after purchasing on a per produyct basis. it will give good coverage on social media and possibly drive its own traffic plus it will also provide much needed social signals/backlinks to internal pages.

one other thing to consider is how you will deal with out of stock / end of life products.

I always try to 301 redirect to an alternative or equivalent product if possible or if that is nto available to a category most suited. Not back to the homepage.
