An Online Tool To Find Web Development And SEO Clients?

Hello all,

I recently decided to make some extra money freelancing my web development and programming skills and was looking for a way to find clients. I set up email alerts for CL and other job posting sites as well as spamming out messages on freelance websites(even though I know it is a very tough market). When reading up on how others had solved this problem of getting off the ground I read some interesting advice for the search. The post recommended going into Google Maps and looking at the websites of local businesses to see which ones weren't responsive(which can be an easy sell as half of all web traffic is mobile nowadays), loaded slowly, had poor search results etc. As I started clicking around and bookmarking potential leads I realized that it was taking a ton of time to even build a small list of leads.

I wondered if anyone had built a tool to automatically search through sites by area to find business websites with the above problems. I figured it would be an easy way generate an effective lead list to jumpstart a dev agency, get more work for a freelancer, or grow an existing web development or design business.

After a few hours of searching and not finding anything that solved the problem I decided to built it myself. I whipped up something useful in a weekend using Ruby on Rails and started building lead lists with the intention of distributing them to some friends of mine who have sales experience and would work for commission(I'm terrible at cold calls so I needed the help). The tool pulls in business names, emails, websites, addresses and phone numbers then checks whether the business website is responsive. If it isn't responsive(potential client!) it does further analysis for site speed, mobile usability, and page rank. It is currently in a half finished state but I have already made a chunk of money using it for only a couple weeks. Someone who could cold call/email themselves would be able to make even more than I am by selling white-label dev services or SEO.

My question for you guys is: does this kind of tool have any value to you or your business?

I'm not trying to sell you anything or wow you with my sales numbers from this "magic tool"(I have gotten a couple responsive design clients but i started with none so I consider it a big step). I am considering putting in time to rebuild it and make it much faster, easier to use, and prettier but I would like to hear from you guys whether or not this is something that you would use to help find paying clients for Web Development and SEO services.

Also if you think this is a good idea feel free to help me brainstorm names for it! So far it is just called "Lead Builder"(but that isn't very sexy)

If this is in the wrong place I apologize. I couldn't figure out where a post like this should go.

I built a similar product as a wordpress plugin a while back. It's been a while since I messed with it so I would have to find it. Basically, it used Bing search and Google's page speed api's to find prospective clients based on keywords and list them in my wordpress site for me (never happened) to contact them. It also created a simple report from the google info that could be downloaded or sent via email. I didn't pull in much business info on mine though as I was more focused on the google reporting and Bing integration for searching. I also created an addon for it that filtered out the prospects based on whether or not they used wordpress (easier to update themes). I called it Prospector. lol I never got it to a point that I would sell it or that I even really used it other than testing... just too busy. Lots of analytics you could build in through API's that might help with the sale's end. I honestly don't even know where the most recent version is... I'll have to check my bitbucket account!

Was there a reason you made it as a wordpress plugin? I use google's page speed API too for the speed and usability scores. Right now I'm exporting the list as a .csv so that it can be imported into Salesforce or another CRM for tracking the calls. I think getting the email and phone linked to the website is a key feature but I'm working on getting more business information such as company size or owner/manager names. I feel like there are so many API's available that there is a lot of room to improve and add features to help close sales.

Prospector is a great name by the way!

I'd love to take a look at your plugin if you wind up finding it. What do you think something like this tool could be sold for if it was polished up? I don't know much about pricing enterprise or business search tools.

I was originally thinking of it as a product to sell here on WF. Unless you're building a SaaS product, WordPress is very common and easy for most people on WF to use. However, that's probably not the way I would go about it now.

I'll see if I can dig it up. I'm afraid I may not have uploaded the most recent version before I lost my last computer... lol.

Create a list of the sites and reach out them and educate them about what a new site and online marketing strategy could do for them.

The tool is functional enough that it can create lead lists that have resulted in sales. I am wondering if other people might want access to this tool so they can make their own lead lists to boost or kickstart their sales. I am wondering what features you might think it should have? If theres enough interest I plan on rewriting it and releasing it.
