    It depends on the link. Some won't do a thing to help you ever. Others from hugely powerful, well respected domains can have an effect. Even then, don't count on it having any effect for at least a month, if not two or three unless you are in an extremely noncompetitive niche.

    SERP tells the ranking of keywords as per the search done on it. If you are working on a link which has been added recently on your website then it will take few days to get listed in SERP. One think which you must keep in your mind is that , you have to use the keywords in that link so that it can come in the search quickly otherwise it won't be effective at all.
