Hello all,

We're new to this forum but have read a fair few threads on here over the past couple of years. We're posting because we really need some help.

We own and operate a lead generation site that generates leads for a niche car insurance product.

Our site was ranking number one for over 2 years for our targeted key phrase, however around march it dropped to position 2 and 2 / 3 weeks ago it dropped to position 3.

Since we started the site, our strategy has been to keep writing keyword rich content and linking keywords to specific pages on the site. We have also put great effort on getting our technical on site SEO is spot on.

The web sites that are now #1 and #2 are both run by insurance companies which have a better link profile than our site and we are unsure what we can do now to compete with them to get back to position #1.

Although we are quite sure that it is their link profile that is allowing them to out rank us we are not certain how we should proceed. We do not have the same budget at our disposal as these firms and would like to know how best to allocate the money we have available. We also do not have the same business contacts that these companies have which may have helped them to achieve links from certain sites.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Theres only one thing you can do - get better links.

However ranking third is not a bad achievement in many insurance results. I'm afraid if these are big insurance companies moving into that result page you have a lot of work and resources you will have to use.

The combination of more money and better connection is hard to beat with self backlinking your own sites. even building a private network or using someone elses network is going to be dangerous. The SEOs that are in that serp would spot that and report it eventually. So that leaves you with two options

developing a system whereby you network with other legit sites
look to create content that goes viral and can get you links organically you normally wouldn't get (very hit and miss).

Unfortunately there are not a lot of systems in place for networking with other sites besides a few business social networks. I know of only one tool for it and its in beta.

Google I think unfairly to what the internet was supposed to be about has created a system that favors larger companies to get links by their media exposure and cash or by taking up top spots with ads.

Theres one thing you should NOT do - Don't buy into any link system or PBN offer that will put your top 3 position now in jeopardy. You might have slipped but in the insurance niche thats a position many others would dream of.

You probably do need to do something though. If others are now gunning for position in that serp you probably will fall even more

Thanks for the responses both of you, we appreciate your help.

Do you think we would see a benefit from investing some money in high quality backlinks and would buying them be the best use of our available budget?

How can we see how often Google crawl our new blog posts/pages? I can see how many pages they're crawling a day on the Crawl Stats section of Webmaster tools but not how often new pages are crawled?

      Thank you
