Guys, results of a live test. I have 2,343 html pages with duplicate content. Only the

Title
H1
H2
One of the keywords in a p tag vary.

The names of products and cities are the variables. And I get top serp traffic for a lot of medium competition terms.

Fyi.

It's been 3 months already. Even if Google filters away my pages, it was worth it because we got a lot of traffic.

When we looked up "duplicate content" in google, Google said there's not necessarily a penalty. Only that pages will be grouped together and only the most popular page will show.

Duplicate content is content that appears on the Internet in more than one place (URL). When there are multiple pieces of identical content on the Internet, it is difficult for search engines to decide which version is more relevant to a given search query. To provide the best search experience, search engines will rarely show multiple duplicate pieces of content and thus, are forced to choose which version is most likely to be the original—or best.

      Ahhhh.. good point.

I meant duplicate content on my own website. NOT duplicate content from another website. It would indeed be dumb to make a website copying somebody else's content when Google would just ignore yours.

As it is, Google ranks my own dupe content high in serps even though only a few words are different.

I see, you mean Unique Content Spinning. This has been an old phenomenon on the web. Duplicate content is when you copy from another website, especially copying original content.
Because google is able to detect when the content was first published to determine originality.

        my 2 cents.

Hi Nest... im not technically spinning any text. I'm only swapping out the keywords in the title, h1, h2 and a few paragraphs.

          For example...

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, <KEYWORD>, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum."

No. Actually when Google refers to duplicate content, they are talking about the same content appearing multiple times on the same website.

And Google cannot detect when content was first published. They only know when THEY first discovered something. It could have been published days or even a few weeks before they ever found it.

Hi. The point I'm making is not that duplicate content is a smart idea. I'm saying that it might not be a dumb idea if you can't make a large number of unique pages due to keyword volume.

So far, it's been 3 months. Getting hundreds of new clicks a month.

Certainly, unique content is best. But when you have 30,000 keywords, you can't make a unique page for each .. so if you only change the title and headlines, it still ranks high in google search.

you have to use canonical tag.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10773599].message }}
    • Profile picture of the author sparkah
If you use canonical tag, this won't work. The point of duplicate content with only heads and titles being unique is to get clicks for those keywords.

If you use canonical, you won't get clicks for those pages

Each duplicate page has the same number of words. 427.

Actually, when my heads and titles have longer terms, it can go as high as 429 for a 3 word keyword.

        What a complete joke.

So you have 2,343 duplicate pages on one domain and they all have 427 words.

        Straight out of Digitalpoint.

I have read in Google's webmaster guidelines that the duplicate content on your website (if it is just duplicated from your website) isn't a problem if the page still has significant (I know, very qualitative not quantitative) unique content. Hope this helps

For all those just taking jabs at the guy you may want to think again. If people didn't test these things and post about them everyone would have to do their own research.

I think @sparkah is well away it may not be a completely future proof plan but if you can get away with it for months and pull in traffic with it then it is a viable technique for some people.

Thanks for the test and for posting your results.

      Super insightful question.

      I didn't mention the context.

I made hundreds of duplicate pages ONLY changing h1 title h2 tags BECAUSE I didn't care about organic SEO.

I only wanted a high AdWords score. That drives down CPC.

I was totally surprised to get a ton of traffic even after I stopped advertising. Yes. I did see the organic traffic in analytics while ads were running. But I never dove in. I just assumed it was a bunch or spam robots clicking my site to get me to visit them. You know.

So basically, I current conclusion is that you're better off putting up a bunch of duplicate content now... Then waiting to put up a clean unique content site months later.
