Website Up and Down - Google Dance or Penalty

Launched a new site on a dormant domain back in January. Domain was dormant for about 2 years and started being active with new content and keywords and generally topic in January.

I saw a slow rise on main keywords reaching page 2 for everything, not amazing but also realised I had a lot more work to do on it in terms of competitors backlinks etc so page 2 was a fair reflection.

It has pretty much stayed around page to for a few long tail keywords however its main keyword, hardest to rank for, most on page it seems to do this strange thing where it falls, falls, falls all the way down to about page 12 then seems to slowly moved itself up, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 etc. Before it repeats the process. It usually takes around 2 weeks to complete a cycle and I am just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before.

It could be the google dance but this seems a little more structured.

Wondering if there is penalties knocking it down or anything.

No penalty I know of causes that kind of up and down systematically so I doubt its any kind of penalty. I would build some links to it and allow it to stabilize. Bear in mind that Google is always making changes to their algo that they do not announce. A few minor changes in some serps can cause ups and down over months. So as long as you stabilize it with some links which we now is a main factor in the algo you should see some steadying

All of this is under the assumption that you have not been posting or changing things on the site. Posting can dramatically change the on page score for relevance.

I've had things like this happen to many of my sites. I usually find it eventually stabilizes. It seems it's just Google trying to find the right place for your site. I agree with Mike though, if you can build some links it will definitely help things settle down.

Look at the backlink profile and Wayback.

Either it's spamapalooza or it's not.
