Yup its a good way but usually they aren't considered quality untill they achieve some good place like if you got lots of diggs then your digg 'll be appearing on main page at that it would be getting most of its exposure at the same time search engines will consider a high quality link. You must try link exchange and one way links. Forums signature also work well in this regard.

I noticed that even though they are nofollow links they still show up as backlinks in Webmaster tools.

My experience has been that although I get some traffic from Social bookmarks, it hardly ever leads to any sales. It seems to me that the crowd using them is of the 'surf for clicks' variety and not a targeted audience. If anyone has a different view I'd love to hear it.

No doubt if social bookmarking site is dofollow then you getting backlinks for your site.

For backlinks you need to do link exchange with quality and related sites.

Comment posting, blog posting also good for getting backlinks.

I think some are missing the boat here, social bookmarking is a great source of backlinks not to mention how fast they show up. however they should be far from your only source of backlinks. It is important to have a good mix of backlinks, get some from forums, get some from bookmarks, get some from commenting, get them from article submissions and create your own feeder sites to grab more backlinks. In addition you should create backlinks for your feeder sites to boost the juice you will get from them. You should also be bookmarking any articles you submit to get more juice from them. It is ok to get some recipricol backlinks but don't rely on them too much. Additionally use bookmarking sites that have nofollow as well, just cause they are not counted does not mean they are not seen by the search engines, it may look a little funny if all the bookmarks for your site come only from dofollow sites.
