You can create more organic traffic without backlinks by having perfect on-page SEO with each page specifically targeting low competition keyword phrases. I know some people think it is impossible to rank without backlinks but we have several case studies where we have done it for some pretty competitive search terms. I really can't be much more specific about how to perfectly optimize a web page. It's not exactly the type of thing that can be quickly stated in a forum thread. I think you should push more content on Social example on Facebook, Twitter, G+, Instagram,...With this way, you still don't need the backlinks, however if your contents are high quality enough, many people will share them for you, then your website will get a lot of traffic and also brand awareness. I think so.

better content, social media, youtube... but if I were you, I'd focus on back links too.. it really helps you get more traffic.. if not, you could bolster your traffic with ultimatewebtraffic or trafix, but no promises...

Without link building then you can go with the social media promotion that will get you more visitors.
Also, you can try with PPC to get the good amount of traffic.

I think build backlink is the best way to get more traffic. Beside you can creat video about your website and upload on youtube channel. Youtube is also effective way to get more traffics.

I am getting a clear message that back links are really important. I just don't really know where to start with that. Being a total beginner I have this idea that its all about signing up to forums and posting a comment with a link to my own website. That feels wrong to me. But I guess there are more reputable ways, like writing articles for other sites?

In my view if your content has higher quality and you are using social media platforms to promote your site then you have a chance. But there are a lot of ways to do it. For me personally image based advertisements has always helped me to attract descent amount of traffic on my website. Sometimes I use different GIF's as well on my Facebook page to spice up my product by carefully using different contemporary funny stuff. Try it out and see how it works out for you.

The other option is to perform social media marketing or Pay To Google (PPC) or any other search engine where you want to target.
But first you may define your goals, targets and etc.

Although having a lot of high quality backlinks helps make it easy to rank high on Google, but everyone forget the fact that:
