Domain name w/numbers

For SEO purposes, would having numbers in a domain name positively or negatively affect the search engine rankings for a website?

If I can't find my domain name (3 words) available as .com, do you think it would negatively affect my domain name if I used the 3 words plus a number series at the end like bestwidgetsever411 dot com?

Or would it be better to just add a 4th word to the domain name?
Or would taking a .org or .net be better than the 4th word and/or number series?

Thanks
Angela

Interesting question to which I would also like to know the current answer.

When the internet was much younger I could not get hold of a domain name that I wanted so I registered the name with 123 prepended to it. It ended up ranking better than the original name and was always at the top of alphabetical lists. I'm afraid that I have no recent experience though.

Take the .net / .org - they rank the same as a .com -> I you have the choice between taking your 3 Keyword with a .net or .org or take 4 word .com domain with your 3 Kws in them, then you should go with 3 KW option -> much better results in my experience...
