Hi there,

I am currently building up a site which is bigger than a classic niche site and offers various topics in the same "niche". I am struggling on how to structure the website?

So let's assume my website is about surgery. There are two main ways I could strucuture the homepage and topics:

1) the homepage is a "hub" for the more specific topics with just a short introduction. That would mean a blogfeed like structure of the homepage that leads to the topic pages / articles. This seems to be a clean hierarchic structure.

2) the homepage is the topic page with the strongest keyword I want to rank for. So e.g. the homepage is about nose surgery. The othr topic pages (e.g. breast surgery) can be reached via a header menu.

Are there any SEO advantages for one of the two choices? From a users point of view, 1) seems to be much easier to understand.

You would want a fairly static home page that is an introduction to the site linking to the separate categories. The categories should be organized in a silo structure.

That would be the optimal setup.

Like Mike said, use a silo structure.

Just because a site is large doesn't mean it can't be well organized. Break the subjects down and group them in relevant silos.

Here's an image showing link flow. The silo parent pages are basically home pages for each subject.
