Hey guys and gals,

I'm trying to do some keyword research for an ecommerce website I have. I'm looking for potential keywords I can rank for using Google's Keyword tool.

Should I use broad match or phrase match when researching keywords?

Thanks,
Gurpreet

I would do both and see what I get. I hear knowledge is power.

    Hey dburk,

I'm looking at search volume, and i need to choose keywords that get searched often enough so i can make sales so by doing exact match this will give me a better indiaction of what people are searching for?

Try both and do some testing to see which performs better. I have found that Perry Marshall has great advise on testing. Look him up on google.

I always test on adwords first to see what keywords get the most traffic and more importantly the most sales then I build my site around those keywords,Adwords is a very quick way to test and I use this method all the time and I am often surprised at what keyword bring the most sles.

I normally use exact match for reference, I don't look at broad match any more...

For me, the true competition comes from allintitle search, it tells more accurate result on how many pages are competing for the keyword, and give me a rough idea on how competitive the keyword is!

For more information about advance keyword research, you can download my free ebook here: Advance LSI and Keyword Research

Google keyword tool only tells you about the search volume from their content network + search network, sometime the count may be high but the fact is, you only get very little searches! So, before you go into competing some high competition keywords, it is wise to use PPC to test for searches.

Try setup a simple adword campaign, and run some ad, limit your ad position at 7~10, let it run for a week and you will find more accurate result

Ok so can someone help clear this for me. The plan of action is...

    1) Do a exact match search on Googles Keyword tool. This will be give me an idea for what keywords people are searching for and give me a clearer indication of the true search volume for those keywords.

    2) Do an allintitle and phrase match search in Google to find out what the true competition of those keywords are and narrow down potential keywords.

    3) then if possible test an adwords campaign.

    Is this correct folks?

P.S. I've just checked my competitors meta keywords. They are ranking number one for keywords that aren't used as there meta keywords. Can anyone shed some light on this?
