Did Google Shuffle Rankings??

I had a site sitting nicely on the first page at #5-7 for a good many months, then suddenly went to #31 overnight.

There are no new competitors who've entered the market and the only changes I've made recently were:

1. Last month in the 30 day challenge I added the site to Traffic Bug.

2. The day before the site dropped in ranking, I added a new page with one of my YouTube videos.

I've put a lot of white-hat work into this site and was proud of its rankings and am understandably not happy with a sudden 4-page drop in ranking!

Any thoughts?

Thanks Warriors!

Not mine, I still have a perfect PR 0 for all of my sites. They haven't moved as far as placement goes on G either.

Sure it's not da Google Dance?

I wouldn't worry about overnight drops. See what happens over the coming weeks. I've had pages drop down and then go up a notch or two higher than it first started. It just seems to be the way Google works.

Yes, that was my first instinct, that Google is just doing its thing - the drop happened on Friday and so it's been a few days now...

So I'm hoping it's just the G-dance - for example, on the way to the first page, my site even totally disappeared for literally months from the SERP's.

As I mentioned, I'm only doing white hat, Matt-Cutts-would-approve tactics - adding lots of valuable relevant content, white hat backlinking, etc. so I can't imagine that Google suddenly dislikes my site...

I suppose all I can do is keep watch.

Anyone else with additional input or thoughts?

      THANKS!

About 3 weeks back I got only a couple of emails to the effect that Google was making changes (a mini "Google Slap") dinging sites more harshly if they figure you have to many affiliate links. And that's the same day I noticed it.

I had two sites go from page 1 to #6 or 7 and two sites did not move. In all cases though, what ever PR they had (1, 2 and 3) dropped by one or more.

So it wasn't much talked about, but something defiantly happened... Back to the drawing board drumming up more backlinks.

There is always some shuffling going on. It is pretty hard to nail down the exact reason sometimes.

My site was sitting on page 2 for my targeted keyword for more than a year till last week, shifting up and down every now and then but 4 days ago when i checked it, it was nowhere in top 100. I don't have any affiliate links or any other kinds of ads on my site. After seeing this thread now i think there has been some changes in the listing...

  • I had a page on no. 2. Suddenly it dropped to no. 168. At the same time Google suddenly showed about 660 competitors in phrase match. Before there were only 10. A few even belong to me. From RSS feeds, articles etc.

My hope is that somehow Google will end up ranking my site even higher after some hopefully-not-too-long period, but that's just my wishful thinking...
