When choosing a domain...

I have a keyword that gets solid search volume and I see a good opportunity to get to the #2 spot.

The only potential issue I see is that the #1 ranking site for this keyword is, for example, "keyword.com".

"keyword.org" is available though. I've heard some people say that it's not a good idea to go with a .net or .org version of something that's already ranking for .com because then google often chooses to just index one of them on the first page.

Whether or not this is true, I have no idea. Would I be better off making it an extended version of my search phrase like "keywordhub.com"? I know it's nice to have the exact keyword phrase for the domain whenever possible so I'd prefer to go with that.

You can go for the extended version of your keyword, add it at the back. so this way you can still rank well in your primary keyword.

      Hi dandee0014,

I frequently see both .org and .net keyword domains on the same SERP as the .com. I would conclude the advice you were given is inaccurate.

The primary advantage of a .com is the perceived premium value, not SERP rankings. There is also a tangible advantage of the default behavior of browsers that will automatically wrap a keyword with "www." and ".com".

  • What Don said.

I've seen plenty of searches with the identical .com, .org, and .net huddling right next to each other, and not necessarily the .com on top.

The determining factors will be whether you can outrank the .com, just as if it were not a .com.

I agree with Don as well,i personally like to register keyword rich domains without bothering about the domains ranking on first page.

I actually don't see any problem using the same keyword with different extension. I see a lot of same keywor domain sin the first page of good one after another.. for example "free advertising forum". There's a lot of domains like this one but still on top.

I recommend .orgs / .coms and .nets - be sure to have your target KW in your domain, this helps for ranking

My first choice is .com followed by .net and then .org and like the others have mentioned I have seen all three extensions with the same keyword on page one before.
