What are you using to uncover your competitors SEO keywords?

When I am writing a strategy for a client’s new website or developing some online marketing for clients I often keen to find out what some of their competitors are using for their keywords.

While I would usually use Google Keyword Planner, a colleague of mine has shared a few other options which I’d love to get some feedback on from you.

Some are paid and one has a free option, the main thing is if it gets me a more definite result of competitors keywords and how they are working then I am very interested.

Here are the three that have been suggested - I’d love to hear if you use them and what results you get from them:

- SEMRush
- Webber SEO Spider
- Ahrefs

I’ve always used Google keyword planner and there is nothing wrong with this I find, however I am keen to combine the process with another program if it gets me some better results.

Thanks for your advice.

SEMRUSH is great and then SEOSpyGlass.

Truth is, if you have been ranking sites for a while and still do, you won't bother much with snooping around on your competitors.

You can just hit the ground running instantly.

Why assume your competitor's are targeting the right phrases? I have never been concerned at all about what keywords competitors are trying to rank for. That's their problem, not mine. We use our own Niche Ninja tool for discovering high search/low competition phrases to target for any niche.

Backlinks are another story. I definitely want to know who is linking to my competitors!

In my limited knowledge of SEO I wouldn't be too worried about what my direct competitors are ranking for, I'd reverse engineer the process and see who's ranking for what I want to rank for and then see how they're getting it right. It's not a case of being a copycat it's simply looking at what they're doing. I can sort of see what Dave is saying although it's definitely important to know what everyone else in your industry is up to in that regard.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheers Ads.

Majestic is the best in my mind, this also is a popular tool to research competitors that many experts are using. I mostly use majestic but SEMRUSH and SEOSpyGlass is also best for this.

    Forget all the tools

if you have a keyword list look at the SERPs to see who you are competing against

it seems everyone wants to push a button and get their results while the real answer is just look at the darn SERPs it's free and it's accurate
