Hello,
I am writing you today to ask your advice. I am getting ready to do a site redesign and do not want to be penalised by Google for a huge number of 404 or 301 URLs

The eCommerce portion of our website currently has thousands of products, some of which get little or no traffic because they are high competition items and I would like to drop those products from the store. At the same time, I am also moving the ecommerce to a different platform.

My main question is this; if I move the products to the new platform and discontinue the products I no longer want to sell, can I safely set up a blanket 301 redirect to send traffic to the new store.

Or do I need to set up individual 301s for each product? I am talking somewhere around 16,000 products, which would be very painstaking.

My next question is; if I were to drop 15,000 products that get virtually no traffic, is that going to hurt me? I will submit those urls to Google for de-indexing, but we all know that they take their sweet time in updating and in the meantime my site could potentially have 15,000 404 URLs.

I would really appreciate your input on the best way to handle this situation.

Thanks!

    Big Job.

Is there anyway that you can set the new platforms url structure to be identical/close to the old one?

Yes you can do redirects and there may be no other choice but I am not a great fan of just automatically solving the problem with mass redirects for reasons like this (that are appropriate for your situation)

You must also be very very careful when making changes to url structures in the move. we had one guy here

just a few weeks back that didn't know there was a problem until it GREATLY affected his SEO and business. It took quite a bit of trouble shooting on a much smaller site than yours to get it fixed for him.

The pages can still rank well in the search engines if you integrate a brief original article into the content. Just 200 to 300 words of search engine optimized unique content can place your product pages ahead of your competition.
