Without seeing the site, nobody is going to be able to answer that for you.

As far as creating 17 thousand pages, it's not that hard depending on the site.

I agree with the first sentence. Definitely not the second.

In four months, that would require creating more than 141 pages per day. Chance are, the vast majority of those pages are not ones with high quality, original content.

That said, you don't need thousands of pages. Google ranks web pages, not websites. You only need 26 good pages (or less) to rank for 26 different keyword phrases.

There's no rule that says a site can't build offline and upload all their pages in a short amount of time.

Also, content doesn't necessarily need to be original to index or rank on the SERPs. Example, dafont.com will outrank an original font designer site/page pretty easy and still host the font/content.

When Google finds two pages with the same text on different domains it all boils down to which one of the sites/pages has better SEO (followed links).

Look around this forum and you'll find a few folks complaining other domains stealing their content and outranking them on the SERPs. It happens.

That's true. The thought never occurred to me that someone would spend months if not a year or more writing content before they ever built a website. I guess it happens but probably not all that often.

You must have missed the threads started by people who wrote/purchased hundreds of articles, the launched the site, then wanted to know how long to wait before doing SEO and how many backlinks per day they could acquire!

And, I know a guy who builds websites... He builds them on a subdomain on his site, then, when client's happy and has paid, transfers them to the client's domain. Seems to be a matter of seconds or minutes for the client's domain to acquire tons of pages.

No, I see all kinds of threads about this and check out the quality of what people are purchasing. Unfortunately, people who do not speak native English are being preyed upon by most of these sites because people don't realize how poorly written most of the rubbish they are buying is. In many cases, all the links in the world are not going to help some of the stuff people are buying rank well, at least not permanently.

    Dave,

It also depends on your budget. If you can afford to hire 50 writers, you can have a lot of content written. Also, there could be tons of ways of generating pages without writing articles.

Tumblr is probably generating more than 17,000 pages a day.

When is the last time you saw anything from Tumblr ranking for anything?

We don't have much in the way of facts here. Lots of assumptions and theories are being proposed by everyone here since the website in question has never been revealed. It would probably be best to not make any guesses at how this is possible until we see the site that has accomplished this, keeping in mind that it ranks for a very limited set of phrases in comparison to the number of pages the site allegedly has.

My objection was the phrase "not too hard" to create 17,000 pages, unless those are computer generated pages, which is why I qualified it with "high quality, original content" because that is what it normally takes to rank unless you point a ton of links at your duplicate, computer generated content. Tumblr apparently hasn't managed to do that since the pages on their site rank for nothing. The task of hiring 50 quality writers is, in itself, not an easy thing let alone paying for those writers. Creating 141 pages per day is also not easy but if you want to say they were written over a one year span before being published, that's still 47 pages per day - still not an "easy task" unless you have a team of writers, which is expensive.

problem with this discussion is no one knows what the thousands of pages are. the ones that rank may be totally different from what makes up the thousands of pages.

Simple websites can be the best. But simple website with 17k pages is an oxymoron.

You have given the first step to becoming an authority site. Content, and lots of it.

The more pages you have, if done right, the better. It expands your web footprint. Each page you create is one more place to backlink. So,theoretically, some pages on that simple website would have 17k backlinks.

If people really knew how simple it was to create tons of webpages, perhaps they would stop being simple-minded.

Perhaps a reality check is in order....

But perhaps those 17k pages that are "indexed," are pages created at a certain point in time for a specific reason....and google crawls the site at the right time. You can have literally tons of pages indexed, but few actually existing. Most of the time, it's a script, data grab, plugin,or robots.txt problem.
