What to do if you are stuck at the bottom page for almost a year?

Hi there,

Our website has been stuck at the bottom of page 1 of Google for our main keyword for almost a year (stuck in 8th position).

I check our ranking via the webmaster console so I figure that this is pretty accurate?

It took us just over a year to get to page 1 and we achieved this by writing good content and getting natural backlinks from reputable online publications.

We have employed only white hat techniques.

I realise that SEO takes time but I just can't figure out how the sites at the top of page 1 have remained above us.

Our site has way more content related to the the subject and most of our backlinks link back to articles that are in some way related to our business.
If you look at our competitors - none of them have any content on their product and I'm pretty certain that they put zero effort into building links for what is a tiny part of their business.

When the recent google update happened there was a lot of movement and we made it into the top 3 spots for a week or so. But then things settled down and we're back at position 7 on desktop and 8 on mobile.

Am I missing something or do we just keep doing what we've been doing and we'll get there?

All comments are greatly appreciated

What you're missing is probably the huge authoritative advantage and e-commerce 'ready-to-buy' traffic that comes with websites of known and trusted brands such as Macy's.

Okay, I've had a quick peek at your website using similarweb, what I would suggest is analyse your overall SEO and traffic peaks. For example, it shows me you had a peak of traffic in June-July time - (your Google analytics will be more detailed/accurate) - what were you doing then to generate this traffic? I'd advise looking into all the areas where your positives lie and continuing them/trying to recreate those spikes.

Learn your audience well to adjust your site to suit their needs. Again, GA will be able to help you with audience insights.

Another tip I'd give you is to explore other areas of gaining potential leads. I think a well-run instagram account could do wonders for your business. (Though this last tip is based around sales rather than your SEO situation)

Quick edit: Writing about related topics is good too - this is important to make sure you aren't ranking as well because of keyword overload, which to Google can look like spam/terrible content

The best reason that is coming to my mind behind your website sticking to the same position for almost an year is that there are better websites that yours. They may have been giving better quality of products, they are older in the business, they may have more loyal customers than yours.

Either you should do some extensive White hat link building or switch to blackhat link building.

Yeah for sure you would like to be above the fold but ha not too bad. Have you checked what your first page rankings are doing? Where they got backlinks and how many of them and stuff. I guess thinking about it that is just a single part....

Just be careful if your putting all your eggs in Google's basket!
