    W3C provides the guidelines so that your site functions similar on different browsers, but not be a SEO factor.

    It`s not really important as a ranking factor but may affect indirectly. Basically, a failure to comply with the standards may lead to less frequent indexing by search engine bots, as a website full of errors in code simply takes more time to load and more resources to crawl it. This may also be an important factor for UX, but this certanly depends on how bad the errors are.

    I would only bet that if there`s no other difference than the W3C errors between two websites - the one with the neat code will rank higher.
