What is better for traffic: Social Media or SEO?

Hi,
My goal is just to get traffic to my website in the fastest ( and most efficient way ) I can.
I found a video on link building and a thread on it as well (listed below). Just had to verify some things ..
The **only goal** of link building is just for ranking in the organic space of Google? If not then how can you guarantee that someone will follow the link (on a web 2.0 site) to the money site so they can buy something?
Also, it looks like one can send Social Media traffic directly to the money site but when it comes to links, only those coming from Web 2.0 properties can point to the money site. Is that right?
