My site Vs. Other site

I posted following as a comment in one of my other threads but never got any reply so I am creating this as a new thread, and hope that somebody can shed some light on it.

There is a website in my niche that shows up at top for lot more keywords then I do, and when I look at his page, there is hardly any html on it...

According to yahoo site explorer, he has 714 links coming in to his site, and I have 2668 links coming in to mine. He gets lot more traffic then I do. His alexa ranking is around 39K, mine is around 280K. Big difference.

I have 106,000 pages on my site, he has just 95 pages. Big difference.

So, from what I know about SEO...I should be getting more traffic (based on number pages on the site, links, reviews), but that's not the case. What am I missing?

Please show me your URL. Without that everything is speculation.

To be honest, there's a TON of factors that come into play here, and it mainly deals with SEO and optimization. Without seeing both of the sites in question, it's really hard to say why his/her site is getting more traffic than yours.

I've seen sites on brand new domains with 10 pages outrank sites with thousands and thousands of pages that had a really aged domain for certain keywords.

It comes down to these factors:
    • PR of linking sites
    • Anchor Text used
    • Keyword volume
    • On-page SEO
    • Off-page SEO (the quality of the backlinks)
    • One-way backlinks
Sometimes if a site has higher volume keyword searches, with more emphasis on building laser targeted (yet high volume) traffic, their site will do better. Also, you may not be seeing all of the link juice he is pulling, especially if he's building link-wheel type links.

Also, since we're only talking about traffic here, are you sure he isn't doing some awesome PPC campaigns?

Could it be a meta tag issue? His title tag has craigslist named in it, yours does not, and while Google may not pay much attention to a meta tag listing keywords, it does like to see a title.

Thank you for sending me the URL's.

I did some digging and here is what I found:

Both sites have a nice bunch of Backlinks. Only problem:
A lot of your backlinks are nofollow.

For example articlesalley .com is all nofollow!

Then your anchor text is somewhat weak in many cases:
"Motion Technologies" might be nice and shiny, but I bet nobody is searching for that.

I also saw a few nice PR5 backlinks pointing to his site

    Solution:
Get yourself a bunch of backlinks, dofollow with some neat anchor text. Throw in a few PR4 and PR5
backlinks and you should be on your way to outrank him.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate that. Now my question is how do I get PR5 or PR6 backlinks to my site?

First thing that comes to my mind is to check competitor website backlinks and try to copy them. Including PR5 or PR6 backlinks if possible...

I would like to draw more attention to the serps, # of pages and # of links vs. traffic parallel.

The thing is, just as pr does not guarantee seprs, serps do not guarantee traffic. You may be showing up for wrong search terms (i.e. those your site is not so relevant to). Your links may sit in wrong places which are unlikely to refer their visitors to your site.
