How are these two homemade sites doing so much better than mine?

I run a mountaineering guiding and instruction company, and have a fairly good website, that has been very active over the years. We've just had a new theme installed, and I'm pretty happy, however, despite blogging regularly, using social media a lot (Twitter and Facebook) and updating things, I've noticed that two competitors in particular, who have homemade sites, blog infrequently and hardly use social media are doing far better for many search terms that I would like to rank higher on Google for.

My site is: Scottish Winter Climbing Courses - West Coast Mountain Guides and the two sites that do much better are:
Winter climbing courses and ice climbing courses in Scotland, Glencoe, Ben Nevis and the Scottish highlands
http:Mountaineering and rock climbing courses and expeditions, in the Alps, Himalayas, Norway and Scotland
Have you checked their backlink profiles? Do they have more backlinks then you? What is the quality? Can you get these same backlinks?

The homemade sites have hotter chicks. Question answered, topic solved. Goodbye.

If by homemade, you mean hand coded....all my sites are hand coded....html, php, javascript, mysql...

    It's not hard,rather easy.

You think facebook was not handmade? Or any real site for that matter?

Wordpress is a bloated, inane cms for dummies.

That's why big companies have a plethora of website builders on their team.

Go get a real website and maybe you too can aspire to be a real webmaster.

Of course real companies (like the above) do tons in advertising....just saying.

Yes, Paulie. That's why well-known companies like Best Buy, Variety, Tech Crunch, The New Yorker, CNN and others use WordPress because it's such a "bloated, inane cms for dummies". Remind me again what your "awesome" "hand-coded" websites are?

Social media posting doesn't do much of anything for ranking in SEO.

Its most likely that other websites have had a nice experience with these other brands and have left a link to your competition on their website more often than you.

I think there must be many factor that explain why those two sites are doing better than yours, backlink must definitely be one of those factors.

Maybe they are also getting more traffic from Social Media than you, that could also be part of the explanation.

Posting frequently and engaging in social media really have nothing to do with ranking better.

In fact, posting frequently can actually screw up your rankings depending on your site structure.

Just at a quick glance without looking too deep, it looks like they have better quality links. Links are the #1 ranking factor, so that is why they are doing better.
