I'm trying to work out if you find a niche that could rank well in google that only has say 400,000 pages, does having the name in the domain as a word like highflyingteddys. or having spaces like high-flying-teddys.

which would work best?

thanks

Doesn't matter. I personally would try and find something brand-able so i can put it on a t-shirt and be a proud father.

Carp fishing tips i guess is decently brand-able.

Deepsea.com or OutdoorFishing. I like 2 word domains. But again it doesn't really matter what the words are. You can turn your website into whatever you want. You can turn eggs.com into a site about funny videos.

    • great idea tshirts on order
so the domain name doesn't help or effect SEO then
so these holy grail keywords how do you use them on a website? is in using them in the page content

Now the question you're asking is the equivalent of me taking my car to the dealer to get a oil change and the mechanic is asking me how to change oil.

The reason you are doing SEO is to rank your website on someone else website (google)

You are attempting to steal traffic from google. Google allows this because they cannot cover ever aspect of life just yet, so they allow for people to submit their websites into their website so they can cover a lot of searches to make their customers happy.

When they first started it was difficult to search for "fishing spots" without getting a website about weird spots on my fish in my fish tank.

So they develop a set number of "rules" to sort through all the websites being submitted.

These rules must be able to understand a page without the need of a human. (this provides SCALE)

If you land on a random web-page, would you know immediately what that page was about or would you get lost and just close out.

Keywords tell google and the person landing on your page what the page is about.

If your domain is carpfishingtips.com im going to assume ill find the best information on how i can fish me up some carp down at my local river.

Google assumed the same at one point but decided that people were trolling the system and decided to remove that feature. Now it doesn't matter.

It can have a small befit as anchor text when people are linking to you using your domain name. I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it, though.

What concerns me more is your view that the number of competing pages has anything to do with how easy something is to rank for. The number of competing pages has NEVER mattered. Whether there are one hundred, one thousand or one million competing web pages, the only thing that matters is how tough the competition is on page one.

Finally, never use dashes (or anything else) in between words in a domain name.

    • obviously I'm new to all this, I assumed using Google keywords tool and seeing what has low competition was the right way to go about finding something that a little easier to rank for.

This is true, however check that they aren't low without reason. For example, under 500 searches per month on a national, low comptition low money to be earnt etc....

It is generally accepted that if you are promoting a product for example "wireless dog fences". It would help with Google traffic if you included the term "wireless dog Fence" in your domain name.
When using your keyword phrase you will get more Google juice from "wireless dog Fence" than "wireless-dog-Fence"
You will also get more benefit from using a top level extension like .com, .org or .net than one of the new extensions like .ws or even .plumber etc.
I hope this is useful. Cheers Dennis.

Yes google gives preference to exact match domain. You can use domain as a word like highflyingteddys without having spaces between them.

Google ranks individual web pages, not websites. Only one page of your website needs to be optimized around the keyword phrase. Optimize other pages around related phrases.

  • i've read an article that talked about the EMD update google did which ranked exact match domain lower, so would it be best not to have the keyword your trying to rank for in the pages/content rather than in the domain name?

Is that EMD update something to worry about, my site hasn't been up long only about 1 week but i can't find it even with typing the domain name with spaces if you were searching for that querry, obviously without typing the dot com/dot net

There are a whole lot of pretty knowledgeable people passing themselves off as SEO experts. The EMD update DID NOT devalue EMDs; it stopped giving them a boost. When people said they got penalized for having an EMD it wasn't that they got penalized; they just stopped getting the boost they were getting before for having that EMD. Many times, it was a site with very poor content that was ranking solely because of that EMD. That does not happen anymore.

Dave is right. There is no such thing as an EMD penalty. Every domain is an EMD for something.

Amazon.com is an EMD for Amazon.

The number of sites in the search results and the "competition" in the Keyword Tool have nothing to do with how difficult something is to rank. Google is never going to tell people if something is easy or hard to rank.

The competition in the Keyword Tool is for AdWords advertisers only. It has nothing at all do with search results.

  • I personally believe that a keyword being in your domain helps a lot with rankings.

Try not to make them too long though try to stick to max of 3 words in a domain.

And remember even if your domain was about fishing and it was freefishtips.com for example it doesn't mean that has to be the title of the site or on the logo.

    Good luck

No, keywords in domain name but if you are using keywords in your domain name I am sure it will help you. For example if you have a keyword like 'highflyingteddys' then you can use it like.. flyingteddys.com, flying-teddys.com, buyflyingteddys.com etc.

The globe of seo could be extremely controversial, with substantially opposing sights on just what the appropriate method is for your internet site to reach the top of search engine result. With Google continually developing its ranking formulas, it could be anybody's hunch about exactly what the appropriate method goes to any kind of provided time. This argument could typically be activated prior to a web site is also produced, with striving site developers questioning if they must be locating a domain which contains their future website's primary keywords.

The value of domain keywords has actually altered significantly with time as internet search engine formulas have actually progressed. While there absolutely are advantages of having actually targeted words in your domain name, they are not as vital as they when were for SEO. Sometimes, they could also injure your search positions if carried out improperly.

I think, early stages will receive small benefits from anchor text from other people linked.
But long term, you have to do SEO and build backlink from high PR PA

Its not important but the domain name itself is a ranking factor that the search engines consider when calculating ranking.
Second, having relevant keywords in a domain name is beneficial because the domain name is the text that other Internet
users will use as anchor text when linking. If you require any further information, let me know.
