Product Level Searching Triggering Local Rankings By Geo

So, I am noticing more and more local search results in non-local search terms. Specifically around product related. I also am seeing these positions swap out by different geographic locations. If this is the case, doesn't keyword rank checking tools become mute if you are gauging a national ecommerce site?

Let me give an example, because I am having trouble articulating this in text.

Here is a product search (non local intent) [Remote Start] in Phoenix. We see a local business in POS 5:

Using HMA Pro VPN, I switch my proxy and cleared cache to Baltimore Maryland for the same search term [Remote Start]:

Same position, with a different local URL for that Geography.

The same is across various products and SERPs. The exact same position. We manage several ecommerce clients that have local shops and geography matters at time. These local shops are across various states. So when you read they keyword ranking reports in various tools like Majestic, AWR, Cognitive, hell event Search Console, they don't report these variances across geo's. In my opinion that makes such reporting moot, and that we need to look at SERP's from various proxied geo's. What a hassle.

The other thing that this is telling me is that certain product keywords that can be found locally will populate local results for that geography in the same position in SERPs based on that product search.

Again, I have seen this for many clients and many products. Have you seen this? How do you manage expectations and tracking with your ecommerce clients that also have a brick and mortar store?

Actually, Search Console does kind of report the variances. Search Console doesn't give you an exact ranking. It gives you an average position.

Anyhow, this is nothing new. It's been going on for years. Rankings in Pennsylvania are often different than rankings in California.

As far as clients, if they are a national brand, I explain to them why any tracking we do is never going to give us the exact position of their pages across the country or the world. The reason we do rank tracking is to watch the trends. Nothing more. We want to see the keywords all trending up over time.
