SEO: Is Blog Commenting Dead?

Blog commenting for SEO used to be popular years ago. In 2016, is blog commenting dead? If I was to use this method of link building, I would post legitimate and relevant comments on do-follow blogs in my niche. I would personally find these blogs and comment on them myself, it would not be done by a software or outsourced. It would not be a spammy ad for my website, but an actual contributing comment to the article. Would this benefit my seo? If so, how valuable would it be? What is a good number of comments I should do per month?

The do-follow link is usually in the "name", not in the body of the comment. Because the name is the anchor text for the do-follow link, should the name (the do-follow backlink) be a personal name, a company name or a keyword?

  • Hi Stealthformen,

I have used blog commenting recently on high quality blogs related to my niche and it actually helped increase authority for my website.

You can do a mix of your name, keyword or company name. I think if you use a company name or keyword and the blog goes through moderators they might not always accept your comment if they think you're only trying to build a link. But, most blogs probably won't care as long as it's a relevant and good comment.

I think it's totally natural if you did 10 blog comments a day on relevant blogs. The power of those links aren't always the strongest but it helps over time if you do it enough. I don't think you should spend too much time on that though.

It's also good to find forums and websites in your niche, that allow you to create your own account and link your website inside your profile name. You can name the username your keyword, like I'm doing and then provide value in the website, like commenting, creating posts, following people and interacting. This helps increase the strength of your profile url, which drives higher value to your link. These blog comments and links in high quality forums are also very good.

Try it out and let me know what you think! Don't be afraid to test it for yourself and use Majestic.com / Moz.com to stay updates on which links are driving more value than others.

    Best regards,

Over the prior number of years, I have observed my comment base shift from on the blog post themselves to on the social media channels I post it on. Generally, I'm receiving the similar "comment count" and engagement I've always gotten...it's just in various places. Perhaps blog commenting isn't dead but merely moving to the social channels?

I don't think it is dead, but it is definitely not as it was a few years ago. Comments can help in Link-building but it can also negatively affect your website if you don't monitor all the comments and links.

If activity on your site is very busy, you get tons of comments every day, it is not easy to monitor links and comments. But if you have less than 10 comments coming on your site, I recommend you to use comments.

If your content is worthy and many people start sharing on social media, forget about link-building, your contents will always rank higher in search engine result.

Google gives a good rank on those articles/post which are more likely to get shared on social media or any other communities.

Focus on building good contents, it will always win !!

Blog comments are not dead when you use useful comments to post.
Your comment should contains information which helps other users to find some great information.
One liner comment like "nice article post" or "Nice information" has no meaning to post.
Your comment should cover those points which are not included in entire blog article and give some read value to the readers.

  • Who decides which comments are spam and which are valued? is the question I've faced this year because I've found strong arguments both against and for blog commenting, very difficult to find answer.
IMO, blog commenting using genuine accounts (facebook, twitter, etc) or via disqus commenting platform should be valued more over people commenting "thanks, very good article, thank you very much for sharing" which is spam 95% of the time i.e. people looking for quick backlinks.
I know Matt Cutts has said that the blog comments give nofollow links which have little value.
    Still, the argument is on.

The moderator of the blog would decide what is spam and likely delete any spam comments. If the blog is not moderated, chances are, it's not going to be a very good link to begin with.

Many blogs (maybe even most, these days) no-follow comments. If getting a little bit of juice from a comment is your goal, check to see if the links are no-followed first.

If it is a relevant blog with lots of readers that could turn into customers, don't worry about SEO or whether the links are followed. Use the blog as a traffic source.

Oh really blog commenting is still alive. Say if I have a website that is hosted on some other site with a sub domain. If I comment in some blog then which site shall be ranked? Shall it be that site or my own site?

    Not at all.

Keep in mind that never spam while commenting. Just provide some value to other users or blog post itself. Help others. and to increase the comments approval rate just use your home page link in url section.

blog commenting is very useful in link building but you should know which site is allowing blog commenting or not according to that you can get more quality back links. Otherwise it will be considered as spam or mostly nofollow.

Spam commenting is a waste of time as any moderated forum or blog will simply remove a spammy zero-value comment shortly, while non-moderated - are 99% no-follow, so the only profit you can get is traffic, and you shouldn`t count on any relevant traffic unless you bring any value or arouse any interest in what you might be sharing.

In case you are really bringing some value with comments in topical blogs - this may nicely diversify your link profile, or at least encourage some users to click your no-follow link out of curiosity, but I wouldn`t put TOO much time into it (3-5 comments a day, tops), as the efforts may exceed the profit here.

Blog commenting is the old technique to generate traffic on a website. It is not so effective now as it doesn't give quality backlink to a website. But, doing commenting on blogs can help you to spread your contact with the owner of the blog site that can help you to generate traffic on your site. But it is exceptional.

  • No, blog commenting is definitely not dead, and still works very well, when done correctly.

You should first look to see whether the page offers a dofollow link. If it does, great!

Then, look to see how many OBL (out bound links) the page on which you want to comment has. The less it has the better. If there are too many OBLs, move on to a different page until you find one that has fewer.

Make sure to make a valuable comment that pertains to the argument at hand.
