Up to some limit, directory submission is not use. Yes you can say that directory submission is not counted in SEO OFF Page Activities.

There are so many directory submission sites 90% of them are spam and will affect your ranking.

But there are some directories which are always helpful and have good PR which help in improving the keywords ranking as well as your website or webpage PR.

So always do submission on high and trustworthy sites.

    Thanks

Unless you submit to paid, well-maintained directories (and DMOZ) you probably won't get a lot of benefit. So yes, they generally look at it as spam because of the low link quality.

  • It wasn't spam up until late 2015 but as google updated their search algorithm (penguin) they emphasize quality over quantity.
All the old SEO techniques such as Directory, Article & Document Submissions, Social Bookmarking techniques have become irrelevant such that sometimes overdoing it negatively impacts the SEO.

It depends on the directories. If they are free, auto-approve directories with little to no moderation, than yes, those are junk.

Yes I would also stick to the point that it depend on the directories. If the directories are moderated then you will only see quality websites and not spam.

Has DMOZ lost its juice because i noticed that one on my site is consistently lower in SERP than my competitor's site. I'm on DMOZ and they are not and their content is 15% of the content I have.
