It will not benefit your rankings. That is the whole point of nofollow.

Nofollow links do not contribute to any ranking value for the majority of search engines, such as Google and Bing. But it's still a great way of getting referral traffic as well as having a well balanced and natural looking link profile. As long as a link is relevant to you/your business, it can still be worth it.

Sometimes the referral traffic from different sites (either through no-follow link) may help in boosting the ranking of your website compared to you do not have any link on those sites. So you can continue promoting (but genuinely) your links without caring about nofollow kind of things.

Nofollow links itself means not to follow that link that is posted. Crawlers will just read them but will not move to your website but its not like nofollow dont have any impact on ranking.

If the nofollow links are relevant then they can have alter some rankings.

There's no such thing as a high PR site.

That's a lie and you know it... there ARE high PR sites, we just dont know exactly which ones they are.. but I think we can all safely assume GitHub is going to be high PR.

It's PR (Page Rank) not SR (Site Rank). Yeah I know about Larry.

Exact URL backlink profiles. Learn it. Live it.

In other words assuming OP got a followed link on a new internal page on Github, he would have to build followed links to that profile page because you can bet money it's getting buried on the 53,600,000 pages indexed on Github.

Juice does what juice does, it flows. The thing with answering on GitHub, is the fact that many people use it as a reference... on their blog it may be you have this issue go look at this fix on GitHub. so the article direct linking may very well be done for you.

Because Google is all about supplying answers.. if I were the OP I would be using GitHub as a content source. Go ahead and come up with a solution out on GitHub, but then write a piece of content for your blog for the very same issue. Basically if there is one person looking for a solution for something, there are dozens, hundreds or thousands more looking for the same.

PR? That metric has been dead for years, where are you getting this information from?

Do you have any facts behind this statement or are you just talking out of your ass? How in the world does PA and DA affect ranking?

What no one has mentioned so far, is that even though the links are no-follow, the anchor text is still added to your backlink profile. So while you won't get the link juice, you can diversify your anchor text to make it better.

Also, having a backlink profile full of do-follows is not healthy and can be seen as a big red flag. You need to have a mix of both in order to have a more natural looking profile.

  • It won't helps to increase ranking in SERP. But it helps to make your website as well balanced. Try to keep 45% of no follow and 55% do follow backlinks to your website.

To all of those that say, its no follow it wont do anything.. I have to say PROVE IT ( proof is not some 10 year old video from matt cutts by the way ). I think you are wrong. Look at local search... look at "Citations" these aren't even links in most cases.. we are talking context based linking.. it doesn't matter if the link is followed or not, there is value.

I have said for some time now.. context based linking is probably where Google is headed.. and the truth is with the examples of "Citations" they already have. and seriously, if they are using them there, we can safely say they are using them elsewhere.

So I am going to say the answer is YES there is benefit here. Especially assuming based on the user name "programmerblog" the link is coming from GitHub ( a programming site ) to his / hers programming blog page. It really doesn't get much better than that.

Good luck ever trying to prove a negative. If I say there are NOT little invisible men who are sitting across from me right now and you say "prove it", how am I supposed to do it?

Only positives can be proven. Sorry, but you need to prove that unfollowed links do actually boost a website's rank.

While there is some degree of correlation that citations might be important for local search only, I've still never seen a study done with actual proof that they work for normal websites. Correlations are far from proof. And, of course, the OP's question was about backlinks - not citations.

Nofollow links may not help your rank but posting quality information and links on high traffic sites can still bring you quality traffic

Nofollow links are not directly help you to get any SEO benefit. But it's a relevant source can directly help you in getting a boost of traffic. Nofollow and dofollow both links make your site natural.
