Are Keywords in Backlinks Overrated?

I am hoping that someone can explain what I have noticed for a while now with backlinks.

I am in online shopping niche. I have have spent some time building backlinks with "Keywords" with my product names or phrases that I know my customers are searching for. Over 3 thousand of my links have been indexed. My website is also 1 year old.

However, I have several competitors whose backlinks are about with about 1000 - 1500 backlinks. All their backlinks only have their site names.

These competitors out-perform me a 1000 times for all keywords (for which they have built no backlinks for).

These sites are in the top 100 performing in our local market while we are still in the 5000 rank.

I optimized and built over 1000 backlinks from many site (pr 1 - 6) for "Buy men jeans in (country name)" still these competitors with no keywords in their backlinks out-performs me by taking #1 - 10.

The only answer I could find is the quality of their backlinks. These are from very high PR and DA sites like from News citations and authoritative blogs.

So, is it really worth it targeting specific keywords and spending time doing keyword research when just targeting or pouring sources into getting the highest available ranking sites to link to your site can rank you high across all keywords searched?

Your Brand Name is not as much popular than others. So try to make your brand name strong first. So Search Engines note down your Brand Name and know what your company is all about.

Then Go for your top selling product and make full efforts to make it appear in first 3-4 links in the Search Engine.

Then I think for others you don't have to make that much efforts to rate your other products.
