Google's Crackdown On 'Interstitial Ads' - How To Deal With This?

I'm sure many of you have heard about Google's crackdown on 'intrusive interstitials'. This update came about 2 months ago and is supposed to take effect starting 10th Jan 2016.

In this update, Google plans to penalize sites that have intrusive interstitials before loading site content, especially on mobile. This is done mainly to improve user experience.

This is of great concern to me, a vast majority of my income currently comes from 'Content.Ad' popups, you can see it here - Top 10 Most Common Phobias - Updated 2017 - Quick Top Tens

I have a couple of questions regarding this,

1) Do these rules apply only to mobile traffic? Or is it for desktop traffic as well?
2) Will it be alright if I can delay the popup until all the other page elements of the page have successfully loaded?
3) Can I make use of slide-in, in-line ad zones as an alternative to traditional popups?
4) What else can be done to survive this without losing my earnings?

Please do let me know what you think about this.
Regards

  • 1.) All devices and breakpoints will be effected. The thinking is that these popups appear to be the content versus clearly identifying themselves as 'pre-roll' advertising.

2.) See #1. The ad completely takes over the screen making it difficult for a user to bypass it. Especially users who aren't internet savvy. If an ad is difficult to dismiss (this goes along with user experience best practices) you will get dinged.

    3. The more original content you see below/behind the ad the better luck you will have.

    4. Seek out networks that don't use deceptive tactics to try to trick users in clicking on ads. The page you referenced seems to push the advertisements more than they do their content. That should be a red flag when you're researching networks to join.
