There are lots of broken link checkers out there, paid or free. In case you mean searching for 'broken link-building' opportunities - I personally use the tools from SEO PowerSuite for the whole routine. I take some niche keywords and check Keyword Difficulty for them in RankTracker (it collects all page-1 competitors for the each keyword then). Next I quicky audit those competitors` websites in WebsiteAuditor - it provides the full list of broken links with the pages they are found on, and the pages they lead to. Finally, I load the websites I picked out into LinkAssistant - it finds the contact details if possible. It has an in-built mailing module, so all I do next is reach out to the owners of websites I find suitable. Just that easy.

Not 100% sure which you mean but:

    Xenu Link Sleuth

    SEO PowerSuite
    LinkAssistant

Xenu checks for 404 and poor redirects.

As others have said Power Suite as a freebie is good or pay for MOZ
