I'm a bit embarrased to ask this but I'm quite amateur...is the signature important for backlinking or because many people on the forums click the link?

In this forum links have to be to your sites not affiliate links.
You can get back links from any site... it depends on the keywords used.
    If you copy your title
"Why is a sig so important for a link?"
and put into google it will come up in the search results.
That's a backlink. This forum's content is well ranked for Google.

thanks for you answer...I have another doubt, what do you mean with "affiliate links"? (sorry to ask, I'm really new into this...)

I see, well...I'm my case we are a little group that created this site/service together and it's turning out into a very interesting business, some of us (which are in charge of promoting) have tracker, in this case should I remove the link from my signature?
          Thanks for all the support.

    Hi,

It's helpful in both ways - to get backlinks and to generate good traffic to your website.

If you are one of the few "co-founders" in charge of promoting the site, then I think you can (and should) still include the link in your signature.

The links we have on our sig is linked to another site, if this link is relevant to the forum or the viewer is interested he might click and get some hits/sales.
But the main reason is to get the site ranked on google for that keyword. Hope this helps.

I've known some people who used forum links just for getting traffic by using catchy signature link. They may have good insight as recently I read at a SEO Strategist, phd saying that forum links are pretty low value:

:...These are the links most of the people work on building every day, these are very low worth links and are barely worth 5% of the value of a good link:
      • Directories
      • Comments on DoFollow Blogs
      • Forum Signature
      • Linking between your sites
      • Link Exchange

I have actually had great success with forum signatures and my SEO rankings. The only drawback is some sites make you meet a minimum post requirement before your signature will go live. This makes it a very time consuming.

Also keep in mind that too many links too fast can be a recipe for no progress. The more natural the linking pattern and the higher quality the links the better.
