I have been out of date from SEO for about 4 months now because I was learning different ways to sell it. I was dumb enough to let myself slip up and not pay attention to how the internet has changed. Any suggestions as to where I can learn/ get updated about SEO?

There is a lot to learn about SEO here on the Warrior Forum but you can also check out places like Traffic Planet who focus on SEO discussion and maybe the likes of Moz too, though I'm less familiar with that site.

The bells and whistles are constantly changing but if you really want to succeed the basics don't ever really change.

Quality in depth authority posts 1500+ words.
    Quality sustaining articles 500+ words.
Solid internal linking between your authority posts and relevant other posts.
    Quality Links to those posts.

It's a lot of work but ultimately you want to provide a good user experience. One where people share your stuff, link to it and return time and time again. When google sees that they will start rewarding you.

You won't rank for your broad keywords anytime soon but your more narrow ones will start ranking and eventually all of those will help boost your broad ones.

You can chase PBN's or whatever the flavor of the month is but eventually their effect will lessen as Google cracks down.

It really depends on what you want though, something long term and sustainable... do it the old school way. Hard work and time.

If you want just throw away sites then you can go the bells and whistles way but it gets old after a while and you'll wish you had put in the time to build something that lasts.

      Fail.

...and this is coming from a guy that doesn't care If you have a PBN or not.

Most authority sites have a network of their own domains. It's normal, it's what normal webmasters do, even If they could care less about SEO.

Even Google has a network of domains.

I'm talking about whatever super duper seo course is preaching and when it comes to a pbn it's generally a network of thin sites and when google catches on, down they go.

        But thanks for the insight.

Regardless, hard work generally outlasts sloppy flash in the pan techniques. A network like you are talking about is far from what most flavor of the month preachers preach on about and generally takes a team to put together.

Ummm.... nothing really changed about how you rank pages in 4 months.

Are you sure you were ever not out of date about SEO?
