How important is adding keywords into internal linking for pages?

For example, lets saw we sell widgets in all colours.
Widget being the main word for the site and colours are categories..
Should I be internal link by just category i.e.

Blue
Red
Orange

or adding 'widget' word to the link

Blue Widget
Red Widget
Orange Widget

My worry is 'over optimisation' but then it's hard to know whether that was all scaremongering if this is still a valid way to do internal linking.

Interlinking but if you do that a lot then it would look spammy instead just do it organically and you will be fine.

Internal linking of your website follows the same logic as external linkbuilding. Focus on interlinking on the most important pages on your website. However, be carreful. As Michael said, if you do it too much, it will be obviously spammy. Focus on keyword research. Then pick the keywords that you would like to rank for. Now, search for longtail variations and semantically-similar variations. Those are the kind of keywords that you want to use as anchor texts. The logic is, the more clarifications you give to the Gbot about the page you link to - the easier it will find it to understand what your page is about, hence boosting the ranks of your primary keywords on that page - the ones you have chosen to use in your page title, H1 and page copy. Hope this helps you
