I have been working my way through the importance of RSS submissions recently - especially submitting article author RSS feeds from the likes of EZA. But one thing confuses me with regards them.

I hear they are useful 'backlinking tools'. Now I could understand that if we were following the example laid out in GuerrilaIM's thread about getting your backlinks indexed where he uses a static RSS feed. But the majority of us use (I assume) more traditional RSS feeds that are dynamic in nature - updating on every post.

So if they are constantly changing, and most places allow only 5 links at anyone time, the rest 'falling off the feed' then how does it work as a backlink? Surely the backlink is very short lived then?

Sounds to me like it is great for getting Google to index a page but not all that useful for backlinking. Or am I missing something?

In my experience RSS for backliking is only worthwhile if people publish your feeds on their sites, and due to the way that everyone is spamming rss feeds to the directories this is unlikely to happen unless you have good content and presence already.

So if you have great content that people really want to share with their own website visitors and you provide an rss feed then this will really help you, but in this case people will most likely find your site direct and not go to a rss feed directory.

Last year people were auto-generating websites from RSS feeds that they got from the rss directories but this is now an out of date method as people have moved onto to spun content, yahoo answers, google video etc.. so the chances of getting picked up from submitting your feeds to directories are less.

Personally I think the best way to do it is hand submit to the top RSS diretories and then build a few links to each feed page to make sure it gets indexed, this way you will ensure you get some backlinks.

You may be able to do this with software but the problem I find with the auto submittng software is its hard to find out the direct link to your published feed afterwards.
