Besides the basic SEO stuff for clients, what are some other good ways to get local businesses ranked in the SERPS?

What have been some of your experienced doing this for other local businesses? Thanks for your help.

interesting... normally i just create massive backlinks w/o considering local seo.

List them in www.google.com/local/add, then have satisfied customers review their service.

Doing SEO for local business can be fun, easy, and very profitable. Get listed on Google maps and all the other local directories. Even if a link doesn't show up or is no follow, if it has great SERPS, then will ultimately strengthen your online presence and brand.

  The best way to find out is to use PPC to determine what is the keywords that people are searching online for your local business in your region.

Local businesses can also benefit from SEO. I have a friend who ventured into optimizing local business sites and it really gives results. It is easier for him because of the familiarity of the business and it is a great help for business owners.
