Can Someone Answer Me This Question About Backlinks?

I was doing a little research on backlinks for a keyword I want to rank for. I found that the site had 91 links, at least that is what yahoo site explorer said. But the thing is, 90 of these links are from within the site itself. Only one of them are from some place different. My question is how hard would it be for me to beat out this site for my keyword. Does internal linking make it difficult or can I just build up a few myself to beat it out?

So do those internal links from that domain count for anything when it comes to me beating out that site for the keyword?

  The internal links on the site DO help SEO, however, if you get related external links, you should be able to outrank them in time.
  Another thing that will make a difference is the age of their domain vs yours.
  Either way, if they only have one link in from an external source, it should not be a difficult prospect.
