No remove links that come from spam websites - check majestic and if you see citation scores is double the trust scores it's one of indications a spam website. Remove links that placed in the footer or blog roll (side bar) from your back links (not from your site).

One of the reasons why Google can penalize you strongly is.... Yes, Slow Loading Time. Have you made any changes that actually made your website slower than before? you have many tools available for free on the web to check your speed

People really need to stop spreading this myth that page speed is so important.

Amazon fails miserably on Google's PageSpeed Insights tool, and they are outranking everyone.

Oh, and they suck at mobile too.

Please check amazon speed again - in mobile speed 62 and desktop speed 64.

But it's still too low to be a fully optimized website.

Google insight is one amazing tool I agree but this results also shows that one should not always depend on it for the ranking factors.

I agree with Mike it really is not a single indication from a real testing that has been conducted by some experts ... showing us that slow loading time contributes to bad ranking. Majority of bad ranking is probably bad links - purchased links from PBN that has poor content or PBN that was caught by Google manual editors. I would check for links that placed in the footer or side bar of wordpress. I would check closely for all purchased links and see if their sites are still indexed.

Check That It Has Actually Gone Down

Figure Out What Has Gone Down Link
A website can appear to have gone down mainly for one of the following reasons:
A programming error on the website,
A DNS problem, or an expired domain,
    A networking problem,
Something on the server has crashed,
    The whole server has crashed.

There are innumerable causes of website outages, including:
    • Hacker attacks
    • Deliberate DDOS attacks
    • A minor mistake in your website's code
    • Scheduled server maintenance by your web host
Make sure the site is really down
Test the site on a separate internet connection
    Try downforeveryoneorjustme.com or isitdownrightnow.com
Visit your hosting company's website, blog and their network status page to see if the problem is a known issue
Some hosting companies will also post network status updates to Twitter or Facebook during an outage
Contact your host for an update, and estimate on when they expect downtime to be resolved
    Communicate With Customers
As soon as you know why your site is offline, notify customers about the problem and when you expect to be back online

If you're referring to the Fred update, it targets sites with tons of ads and low value content. So if you're site is like this, you may want to rethink your strategy.
