What's the point of article marketing?

This is something that i've been wondering about for a while, so i thought that it was about time that i asked some article marketers. If i have a website, is there any point in me submitting and doing link building to articles? For example. I own a poker website. If i want to target the phrase "play poker", i could write an article featuring that phrase, submit it to goarticles, and build links to it, hoping that somebody who reads it will follow the links to my site. Or i could just put exactly the same article on my site. Surely putting it directly onto my site has two advantages. 1. The article will be on a poker domain so will carry more weight. And 2. All of the link juice that leaves the article will be spread around my site and not the article directory. Am i missing something?

The idea behind article marketing in a nutshell, is to piggyback on the authority that the article marketing site already has with the search engines. This leads to quick rankings and an indication if what you're doing is working or not.

It's also used for back links.

From there, it's of course best to use that content and create your own authority site related around the working niche.

I generally add the articles to my blog first, then add them to the directories with a backlink directly to the article on my blog. That way Google is under no doubt as to which is the original and you get some links and visitors.

Put the article on YOUR site first - absolutely. But after it's indexed and hopefully ranking, take that same article and submit it to a few directories, linking back to either your home page or another article on your site.

That way you get the best of both worlds.

I suspect the value of article marketing for link building has dropped with Google's recent Farmer/Panda update that is lowering the rank and authority of many directories ie EzineArticles, HubPages etc.

Here's some info from SEOBook about it.

bots! the 'logic' is that they will count you links that you put on other people sites with your articles and have a few people click and the bots to notice you have links out there and count them when ranking you.

The point is that their are benefits to article. While how much benefit may be debatable, it would seem that it can only hlep your site. If your going to produce articles for your site, why not get the extra benefit of article sites?

It's easier to rank an article than your actual website.

...but then look what happens when google has a major update. POOF! All these top rated articles on EZA are nowhere to be found.... if only someone had put these articles on their own website and got them to rank properly

A little work goes a long way.
