Which SEO methods should I ditch - and why?

Some say that SEO is all about content. Some say it's all about links.
I'm pretty sure that both are still pretty important.

However... every time people ask how to go about it, they are told to
submit to search engines, have lots of meta keywords, update their
websites daily, etc etc

What I want people to know is:

Which SEO tricks that were valid in -- say -- 2003 are no longer useful
now?

I want to read what should NOT be done anymore. And please add: why not.

First of all...there are no tricks in SEO.

So we know from Andrey Lipattsev (Search Quality Senior Strategist at Google) that the top 3 signals in the Google algorithm are content, backlinks and RankBrain.

That being said, I would highly advise to learn about 10X content (check MOZ), learn about high quality backlinking, and learn about RankBrain (and Knowledge Graph.)

Furthermore, to answer your question, I have ditched:

Massive crap filled content creation. Before you could create content every day around your keywords and as long as you were constantly updating and putting up content you'd rank. Today, it's much better to write holistic articles that might take you a month to put together, and might be very long in text, might have a video, infographics, some sort of interactive script for the user etc., but will rank better.

Spammy Backlink Building. I have stopped creating large amount of web 2.0s, social bookmarks, and directory submissions. Instead I go for high quality backlinks from relevant sites.

There are more things, but this is a good start. I gotta get back to work.

I have no idea why you want more conflicting opinions, especially for things that don't rank pages.
