On one of my first websites, I have done about 150 manual directory submissions, another 100 or so semi-auto and recently submitted to traffic bug (auto submissions). The thing is, not one of them shows up in site explorer. I thought it was pretty normal but I investigated the back links to a friends site, and saw there were 50 or so backlinks listed from directories. It makes me wonder why mine aren't showing up. I've had all kinds of confirmation emails saying I am listed from both the manual (a few months ago) and automated (recent) submissions, yet they don't show.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Getting directory listings indexed is pot luck. If you build a few backlinks to your directory post it will get indexed but in my experience only certain directories are worth posting to. I may make a video showing my method soon.

I use DirectoryBot and it's been my experience that it can take months for the pages to get indexed. I only do directory submissions because i can automate it, i don't think it's worth the time to do it all manually.

Most links are buried deep in the structure of a directory and, even once they are listed, it can take weeks for the spiders to find and evaluate them.

Directory back links are difficult, it is better to do bookmarking and directory submissions.

  • I no longer bother with directory submission. Definitely not an efficient use of time. Very few of them ever show up in Webmaster Tools - meaning they aren't doing much for you in Google. Even using tools, and I have them all, I get more "ranking bang" for the buck using the same time it would take to do a run of automated submissions by writing one 250-word article and submitting it to EZA instead.

Frankly, I wouldn't jump at the conclusion that anything that manages to show up with GWT is important in terms of ranking with google. Different things show up, including nofollow links.

        Joe,

I wasn't suggesting that showing up in Webmaster Tools means it's important. My point is that if they aren't showing up there, they aren't adding anything to your ranking values at all. Separately, while nofollow links are low-value, they aren't "no-value".

Focus on high quality directories with PR and get them over time, not 200 in a day 0 the rest of the month.

If you stick with it, you can get some decent directory backlinks. Many problems now are that directories dont last long enough to get a decent pagerank and authority and end up dying off before the link they provide (if even approved) passes any juice through to your site.

Well, that's what I meant. Google Webmaster tools have been reported to display various sets of links, which doesn't seen to fall into a pattern.

As to nofollow links - they are not exactly low-value, but are rather supposed to not pass ranking data.

Here you just need to do one thing. Check weather your site is being indexed by google or not ? is it google cached...reasons could be its non cache.
try other methods of link building, instead of totally relying on directory submission.

Matt Cutts talked about directory submission as a way to hurt your site. They look at most directories as "spam" sites.

He said when they look at directories, they look for 2 things first:

    1. Do you have to pay to get included (yes=good).

    2. Can you be denied even though you paid, like Yahoo. If you pay and you're in, they don't value that directory at all, because that directory is just selling links then. They want to see an editorial review process.
